DJ Reader HR-Grand Slam

Tournament MVP:DJ Reader freshman from Grimsley with 2 HR’s vs. High Point Andrews and the Grand Slam versus Dudley tonight…..

On a cool, windy evening and a day later than scheduled, Grimsley overwhelmed Dudley in the championship game of the Dudley Easter Tournament. A case of weary pitching and several missing regulars doomed the Panthers early as the Whirlies scored 11 runs in the 2nd inning. Grimsley was led offensively by Kory Shumate’s 4 for 4 night with 4 runs scored and grand slams by Yuri Johnston and DJ Reader. Chris Harrelson also contributed with a 3 for 4 performance and 2 runs scored. Although Dudley hit the ball hard at times, the early deficit would be too much to overcome. Dudley was led by Ray Crawford (3-3, 2 runs, RBI) and Brandon Burkes (1-3, 2B, run, 2 RBIs).

  1. Joe, what do you mean? competing against NW and E. Forsyth will help give it a break. winning against teams at 1/2 strength or weak teams says nada. they’ve lost more games at this point than they did all last year.

  2. Steven Mekita pitched for Northwest Guilford and by the way, next week Grimlsey faces High Point Wesleyan at home on Monday, they go on the road to East Forsyth and then meet Page at NewBridge Bank Park on Saturday.

  3. additional congrats to Yuri Johnston who not only hit a grand slam but was 4 for 5 with 6 rbi’s and 2 runs.

  4. Glen Clemmons , center fielder for 4th ranked Northwest Guilford High Vikings, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship at Southeastern Baseball Classic in Hartsville, S.C. Congratulations go out to him and his family. Go Vikings!!!!

  5. Is it just me? I am concerned with the quality of baseball played at the Dudley tournament this weekend. Its hard to tell how good Grimsley really is, but they did improve each ball game. Dudley was just ok. Smith, Central and Andrews are a real concern. Where have we let these kids down? It seems to me that Little League gets them started , and there is only so much you can do in one to one and half hours a week there. Middle school and JV baseball has failed in teaching skills and fundamentals. There are kids that could really improve if they were taught the game. It is hard to read when you do not know your A B C ‘s.

  6. P-harvey, let Yuri have his day. A grand slam is a great feat. Let the kid enjoy it. Who cares what his average is? Let him enjoy the moment. I’ve seen the kid around but I can’t say that I know him but I can say that I am happy for him. I’m sure he will remember this feat for the rest of his life.

BB Fan, Greensboro youth baseball has fallen apart. Not even part of Pony anymore, as of last year. There is very little effort in getting minority kids in the High Point Rec baseball programs. The only guys developing minorities in baseball in the county (on a large scale) is the Aggie program and you see some of the positive results at Dudley.

  7. If a high school is going to have consistant baseball teams, they need to have feeder programs. Summerfield, Oak Ridge, Southeast area, Northeast area, Jamestown, pockets in Greensboro and High Point, and some others have worked in the past to provide baseball programs to keep good feeder leagues alive. The more children that start out playing with good instruction, the more you have left in the 13-14 age brackets. In Summerfield, we typically have about 120 7-8 year olds playing. That number goes to 100 9-10 year olds. That number goes to 80 11-12 year olds. You then end up with about 35 13-14 year olds. Other sports like soccer, lacrosse, basketball, and football take a few away. The key is to have well organized leagues at an early age. One or two 11-12 year old teams feeding a high school will not contribute to a highly competitive baseball program.
