Northern Exposure

There’s more on the the investigation of the Northern Guilford athletic programs in today’s News and Record at www.news-record.com.

This will become much more serious than the program with Joel Fleischman, the doctor, who was trying to help the good people up near Fairbanks, Alaska a few years back on the CBS network. The Northern Exposure television show ran on Monday nights and it was a comedy and it contained a ton of dry humor, but it was very entertaining to a certain degree.

There’s a lot of information starting to hit the papers, internet, and television as the investigation continues up at Northern and much of what you have seen over the past week and what you will see and hear in the days and weeks to come; if you have been reading along with us here at Greensborosports.com, then you have seen almost all of this already.

We have had the transfers and the stories behind them going all the way back to when Northern opened and I think we have been fair in our coverage of these happenings. We have talked about all of the football players that transferred into Northern. We talked about the baseball transfers. We discussed the questions surrounding the basketball program.(At times we made mistakes, but we had comebacks where we regained much-needed positive ground.)

Pretty much all of the names that you are seeing in the news now, you have seen here before. Northern has been looked into before and they have been allowed to continue to play the games.

It will be interesting to see what directions these current and more thorough investigations end up taking.

It will also be very interesting to see the end results after all of the dust has settled and it may take a while.

You still have to hope everything turns out best for the kids and that they can still enjoy playing the games. It will be especially stressful for those athletes who might have scholarship offers hanging in the balance.

The Guilford County Schools will re-open on Monday morning after the week-long Easter/Spring Break Vacation.

  1. Well, this whole story is getting old. My view of the whole issue is this:

    1) There have many complaints about alleged improprieties @ Northern Guilford.
    2) The Guilford County school system has not been able to fully substantiate anything from their hours of investigation or they would quit “pussy footing” around the whole issue.
    3) The Guilford County school system has put innumerable hours ( will probably deny there is any cost or use of outside resources ) for this investigation.
    4) The Guilford County school system is very concerned about public perception and does not want to come up “empty-handed” after all the publicity.
    5) The Guilford County school system has been very “cagey” in how their comments have been worded to enable the public to “run away” with the story and make lots of assumptions.
    6) The Guilford County school system has now put themselves in the unenviable position of investigating every single charge of recruiting and illegal residence accusation that is made whether they are within the system or outside the system.
    7) The Guilford County system will have to be very careful in an enviornment of cost containment and cost cutting to determine how they will fill coaching positions currently filled by volunteers (and rumored to number over 350) who work with little or no compensation with faculty and staff who will expect compensation for their time and effort ( and rightfully so ).
    8) If affiliation with AAU basketball is a “no-no” for being a coach, then the Guilford County school system will also have to include Impact baseball, USSSA sports, GYSA, etc., and ad infinitum or risk legal action ( not from me, but from those who feel excluded for whatever reason ).
    9) This list of potential problems could go on forever, but I wanted to help, because I have a feeling neither our elected leadership will be able to “get their arms around these issues” nor our appointed and tenured contract employees will be able to get over the “hand wringing” and hanging their hats on the Privacy Act to make a good decision.

As an aside, I have seen many people say that Superintendent Green really stepped up and dealt with the perceived issues @ West Charlotte and Charlotte Independence. What exactly did he do or is this just another example of “Urban Legend”? The reason I ask is Charlotte Independence continues to be a powerhouse in football ( no state championships but very successful ) and West Charlotte won the 4-A Women’s basketball championship this year.

Guilford County has implemented a great many rules that make them outliers in academics and athletics ( AD’s cannot coach in Guilford but can everywhere else ) and if academics are so important in this county, why can athletes continue to participate with less than a “C” average in their classes? To me, that rule in itself, produces a lot of questions regarding the true commitment of ths county to it’s students and student athletes.

I hope I will receive many comments, and I hope they will come in the same manner as this has been presented. I am only trying to get everyone to think about the whole issue as well as where is this really going?

    Jack

  2. With all the advancements in technology, what is the need for transfers anyway? I’m always hearing that the reason a student transfers is because of academic needs, but I know we have internet classes taught in the school system and we already have a GCS TV station in place. I would think that these avenues would allow any student in the Guilford County system to be able to take any class that is offered in the county. What would be the fallout if all transfers came with a mandatory 1 year exclusion from extra curricular activities? Would this help the perceived problem? It may be extreme because I have not read of any band directors or choral directors or any other club leader being accused of recruiting–just in athletics. Let’s try to come up with solutions to these issues and fix the problem–not the blame.

  3. I agree 100% with everything Jack stated.

Where it’s going, I don’t think even the county knows…although I’d be willing to bet we’ll see charges and legal action taken against them.

I’d really like to see the kids, faculty, staff and parents of Northern stand up and fight for what they believe in. Posters, letters, petitions, pickets, etc.

This whole thing was started by a couple of ignorant, jealous parents inside Northern whose children lost playing time in numerous sports due to transfers being better than them…and ignorant, jealous parents outside of Northern upset at the success, better facilities, better coaches, better staff.

If an athlete is talented enough to receive a scholarship, they are going to get that scholarship over the “not so good” athletes no matter where they play. College admissions, same thing, the kid who is an all around better student, sthlete, community member is going to get the scholarship over the not so good all around students. Welcome to the real world people. If your child isn’t living up to your expectations get them a trainer or tutor and deal with it. Don’t go around condemning other children for their talent and success.

  4. Andy and Jack, I believe you both have serious flaws in your perspectives on this. Andy, for you to say this blog has been out in front on reporting this issue is laughable. Where’s the reporting? The mere mention of Student A transfering is not reporting. Did you look into it when Student A, B, C and D started transfering? If so, I haven’t seen it. I’m not a fan of our hometown newspaper, but (as a former journalist myself) I applaud their aggressive pursuit of this story. Jack, I’ll address your concerns one by one:

    .
    2) The Guilford County school system has not been able to fully substantiate anything from their hours of investigation or they would quit “pussy footing” around the whole issue.

True, they haven’t substantiated anything yet — as least publicly. The investigation is still going on. What makes you think they are “pussy footing?” The fact that they don’t rush into judgement on this? That would be irrespsonsible. Take your time. Get it right. That way, if NG is guilty or exonerated, fans on boths sides of the issue can know with confidence that the ruling is solid.

    3) The Guilford County school system has put innumerable hours ( will probably deny there is any cost or use of outside resources ) for this investigation.

Given the current budget woes, I hope they ARE handling this ivestigation internally. Much like 90 percent of the comments on this blog, your speculation that GCS will deny costs is just that: speculation.

    4) The Guilford County school system is very concerned about public perception and does not want to come up “empty-handed” after all the publicity.

I’m glad they are concerned about public perception. If you are implying that they will find a fall guy in this because of all the publicity, you are speculating.

    5) The Guilford County school system has been very “cagey” in how their comments have been worded to enable the public to “run away” with the story and make lots of assumptions.

Cagey? They haven’t said much as far as I can tell other than they are investigating eligibilty issues. You don’t have to be a layer (though I am one) to appreciate why they are not letting this play out in the media.

    6) The Guilford County school system has now put themselves in the unenviable position of investigating every single charge of recruiting and illegal residence accusation that is made whether they are within the system or outside the system.

No, they have put themselves in the position of investigating CREDIBLE accusations. As a parent of a soon-to-be western Guilford student, I’m glad they are not ignoring the issue. I would think you would be too.

If affiliation with AAU basketball is a “no-no” for being a coach, then the Guilford County school system will also have to include Impact baseball, USSSA sports, GYSA, etc., and ad infinitum or risk legal action ( not from me, but from those who feel excluded for whatever reason ).

Are you suggesting that GCS will require all coaches to be full-time employees of the school system? If they do, then your point’s valid. But there’s been no mention of that by the school system yet.

Would folks prefer that the school system just turn the other way and ignore this problem (not just at Northern, but across the county)? They received a complaint — several actually. They are looking into it. If they aren’t doing their job, what should they be doing?

Let the facts come out in the case. What’s so bad about that?

  5. It is not our job to participate in legal investigations at least I do not perceive it to be that way. We put the facts out there and see where they go. I don’t recall how many families I spoke to during this timeframe, but it was several. There are those that will question our fact-finding capabilities, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Our main job is to do right by and to protect the kids and that is where we all have failed and I will take part responsibility for that. We need to do more to try and help these kids in the future and now at this time all we can do is pretty much look above.

Look above at what the previous gentleman said, “we have to let the facts come out in the case”, and go from there.

This may be a very opportune time for us to back off and let justice take it’s course.

  6. Ok I have to vote for common sense.

2 stud basketball players transfer in by there parents getting jobs as janitors at the school.

Know I am no brain surgeon but I think that would raise suspicions for the most trusting person. You can’t really ask why after it turns out 2 of the transfers showed up after their parents just happen to get jobs there. I think any reasonable person would assume that is fishy.

  7. Yo Bill – get your story straight – one was basketball and the other was football. Inaccuracies is what is causing problems in this whole deal.

  8. I have been reading all the mess that you all have been writing about Northern. First of all the article that came out today, is a bunch of BS . I will tell you this much Mo Greene spent $1.2 millions dollars of Charlotte/Mecklenberg county tax payers money on his investigation only to find nothing on Independence(Tommy Knotts is still coaching) Only West Charlotte and South Meck and Myers Park. People ask why did Coach Force resign, lets say you get called down to Central Office for one thing, but they tell you that you cant leave and they want allow you the chance to get an attorney. They tell you if you dont make your decision now than your retirement and your pension will be lost if you dont make yourdecision now. That would scare anyone to make a harsh decision(it hard to lose 25 years of teaching). 2nd they talk about Maurice Harris and that he transfer. The real story is that Tommy Pursley and the father got into an arugement about Maurice going to a football camp at NC State Tommy said some pretty mean things to the father. The father said that he would never play for Tommy again. The mother was already working at Northern 6 months before this incident. The paper forgot to tell this imporant information. That is why he transfer, also the paper states that that other players transfer to Northern, but again the News-Record left out another important fact. Those 4 kids lived in the new district(Northern) they didnt tell you that they had a choice if they wanted to ride the bus they would go to Northern, if they could provide there own ride to school they could go to Northeast. I will tell you this much the parents of those students and I am one of them I will tell Primm and Pursley called and tried to convince us not to leave.(we have the phone records to prove it we all are waiting for the right moment to provide to GCSS). 3rd that meeting with AD Force and Coach Roscoe, AD Primm and Coach Pursley was a meeting that Herb Goins said they had to have NOT TRUE. Herb had already retired, Northern was trying to show good faith with the Northeast people. another lie from the News-Record. 4th they said that the investigation started in late 2008, another lie by GCSS(start with the baskeball team and Northhwest Guilford and the school system being sued by Coach K). What does it sound like well GCSS does have anything but stuff they have already investigated and didnt find any wrong doing. They are just witch hunting. 4th Mr. Joe Yeager goback to Coach Force and the same thing applies excepted Mr. Yeager had the wrong friend in his life(Dr. Terry Grier) Everyone at GCSS has been after him why for two years while Northern was being build he over saw the project and he made some enemies during the process. so GCSS so a chance to get him and they did, but this is not over for a long shot. Will or may not hear about the law suits but they are coming.
BUT IN THE LONG RUN THE CHILDREN ARE THE ONE S THAT ARE GETTING HURT BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY THE CHILDREN DONT PAY ANY BILLS OR MAKE ANY DECISION IT IS THE PARENTS. I WOULD DO IT AGAIN TO PUT MY CHILD IN THEBEST POSITION TO BE SUCCESSFUL.

  9. The main defense that NG seems to have is threatening lawsuits. People resigned, how can they sue when they obviously made the decision to quit? If they were sooooo wronged then I would think they would be men enough to stand up and fight for what they feel is right and then if they et fired, then sue for wrongful termination, defamation, yada yada yada and they would probably get their retirement (if that was even threatened) and a bunch more. Instead they had the option to walk away and did so. Sorry, but even as someone as unintelligent as myself I can see that they got caught doing something and it was the wise decision for them to move on.

  10. while handling this investigation and trying to come up with a solution – here is a way GCS can come into a money windfall and make everyone happy. If they adopt a 1 yr wait to play sports for transfers, all the private schools will get a windfall of great athletes and high school sports will become worse than it already is. All they have to do is let students go to whatever school they wish, but if they want to go to a school outside where they live, they pay a tuition fee of 5k to 10k and believe me people will pay it for going where they want – look at what they are doing now, lying, renting house, falsifying documents, turning over their kids to live with other families in the proper district – this would be so simple and make everyone happy. Money could be used for the thousands of trailers needed for the schools that are worth going to.

  11. Two careers have been altered and another affected as well. This investigation is not over. It will and has already begun in some other schools. What we have here is a system that allows parents to change schools for basically any reason. The system must change because it does not force GCS to address the root cause. Parents are moving kids from one school to another for educational, safety, athletic reasons, etc. And nobody can not blame any parent for doing this. All parents want the best for their kids. WE should be asking the question, what is GCS going to to fix the schools?? The focus of school administrators including board members should be to make schools more equal academically and secure for students/teachers. This would solve many issues, which is another discussion. In the case that some would still require special transfers, GCS policy should change dramatically. One rule should require those granted a special transfer one full school year of no athletic participation. Another question, should we have students attending schools where the parents work unless they live in that school district. This is too tempting and depending on the position of the parent at the school, could be a conflict of interest. In any event, anyone can move into any district they desire this is a free country. Some may look at Forsyth County and their policy, it still does not address the issue of improving schools across the district. Besides Forsyth opened up some new schools and they have not had the issues GCS has had in the short time NG has been opened. This problem is not a one size fits all issue. The issue at NG is not over it will affect more people and other schools will have further investigations. Moe will know when it is all over. GCS wants to get through this as quickly as possible and will not make an official annoucement until it has concluded a full and complete investigation. Remember they have a full time legal team that is very qualified and look at Moes back ground. Not to mention outside legal advisors. This is a very delicate situation and GCS will have ALL their ducks in a row when they open the flood gates.

  12. I was surprised by the number of approved transfers. Clearly that has to be tightened up.

The transfer rule solves the problem. 365 days off sports after transfer. Very simple and used all over the country and the NCAA. If it is about academics then parents will see it as worth the sacrifice. Also you would see a huge drop in requested transfers.

Also NG is not the champ if the rule is in place. Basically makes all teams earn it by building a system. Not just an all-star team.

  13. why are so many people anti athletics? post after post speak of athletics as if it is an evil thing. athletics encourage a lot of talented kids to make passing grades so that they are eligible to participate in athletics. for many highschool kids athletics is what challenges them to attend college. i think that many of our decision makers have no background in athletics and therefore do not fully appreciate the postives that athletics have to offer.

  14. Just as a side note, did anyone notice the large number of Northern Guilford supporters out at Four Season’s Town Centre this evening?? Lots of people wearing their purple and black gear in support of the Nighthawks.

The investigation into the Northern Guilford saga continues…….

  15. NorthernParent, you accidentally misspelled your name. Here, let me fix that for you…**** ********* You’re welcome. PS: If the newspaper is packed with so many lies, how come we haven’t seen any retractions, corrections or letters from Northern coaches or players who feel they’ve been wronged? Seems to me they’re all hiding

  16. We are all going to have to be careful about using names that have not yet been brought forward and made public in this case. Thanks for your help in this matter.

  17. Legal processes take time. By law they have something like 7-10 days to withdraw their resignation. I’m sure they too are getting all their ducks in a row. It’ll be soon, real soon.

  18. Mikey D,or are you Pursley, I am not Coach O, he actually coaches my son who plays linebacker at Northern, but nice try there trying to get some more of this rumor mill started. It is a shame that you would try to discredit a person on this website when you have no ideal what you are talking about. As I see it you must be one of the many haters outthere trying to stir up rumors and lies just like the newspaper so that you can benefit from it. My son thinks the world of Coach and thats what is important to me. How do you know that there has not been anty letters or corrections sent to the administrators. You seem to think you know so much please tell us the what the outcome of this situatioin is going to be. You can’t do that because you and the many other haters on this blog don’t know but I know what you are hoping it will be. If you are not Pursley, then why don’t you ask him what happened in the conversation between him and the father. Please have your facts ready before assuming that you actually know something.

  19. I know everyone is getting fired up about the issue and all. I am surprised at all of what happened at Northern. Oh yeah, and there are NO lies about it. Championship titles for a two-year school seemed a little fishy to me but I didn’t care. As a matter of fact, I supported Northern through their playoff journey. Right now, all of the employees of GCS are living about the “Northern Scandal”. They cannot talk to each other without mentioning the ever-growing mess at Northern. I am just surprised that a two-year old school can have so much drama already. Well, I’ll keep informed..and good luck Nighthawks to try to get out of this mess.

  20. Andy, why start redacting names now? You let people heredrag kids names through the mud for years. Now you suddenly have a conscience?

  21. I have been working to clean things up and to make things better here for a good while now. Can I get an AMEN somewhere.

We have taken down comments and dropped blogs altogether. Just flat our taken them down and we may have to do that again.

We are all still learning and I do not believe Coach Tommy Pursley would ever come on this site and leave a comment. The man is a professional and has been for many years and his records prove that out. Just look at what he did this past season. One game away from the State Championship game after the start they had?

We have some excellent coaches in Guilford County and the kids are looking to get a good education in our Guilford County Schools and we are all learning quite a bit here at this site and it does keep us busy.

    Have a good Sunday.

  22. I feel fortunate to live in the Northeast district and have kids participating in athletics there. Our school gets victimized by athletes leaving to go to ” greener pastures” as much or more than any other school in the district. Most of the coaches on staff at our school have been there over 10 years and there have been no recruiting alligations or other dishonesty issues or even hearsay about any of them. I find that the Ram coaches care deeply about their athletes and about the sports that they coach. We may not currently be the winningest athletic program in the county but we are going about it in the right manner.

  23. I hope either the county allows Coach Pursley to do the AD job and coach football or if not he decides to keep coaching and let someone else be AD. His record speaks for itself. He has been to the playoffs every year starting in 1993. His loyalty and professionalism are also above reproach. It would be easier to find a quality athletic director than to have to replace a football coach with his record for as long a time as he has succeeded at the same school. I also agree with Northeast parent that all of the coaches on our staff are genuine solid people that are great for our kids.

  24. My child played sports at northeast last year and I knew personally of several students who lived out district and the coaches knew about it. I know cause we used to joke about it and they would say at one point everyone was trying to “find an address” to come out there. I know more on N.E but it doesn’t matter everyone will just say this is about Northern. Go figure.

But please know this goes on at every school whether we know bout it or not.

  25. mccain DID play on the 16U team for K. so it wasn’t as if he didn’t play for the guy.

  26. To former NE parent–The fact remains that our coaches did NOTHING TO ENCOURAGE SOMEONE to change to our school. These coaches worked with whomever came out for their teams. How the athlete ended up at NE has nothing to do with a coach UNLESS that coach initiated them changing to our school which is not done by anyone on our staff.

  27. WOW you are right, I was responding to MiKe D. Proving that some information that is being reported is wrong. Including this blog, greensboro news and record and 6000 emails about Northern.

Yes he did play on the 16U team. However the News and Record had one thing right. Christian McCain was the MVP of the regional and State playoff game. If I was coach Kent I would be pissed off also. No wondering page is in an uproar, But one player doesn’t make the team.

    Thanks

  28. coach pursley is a good high school coach but making the playoffs all those years makes you wonder what could have been. ne has made a habit of beating teams that they are physically better than and then meeting teams in the playoffs that are equal to or slightly more talented. ne offense has one of the most conservative play calling know to man. 8 in the box, stop the run, and ne is done. The have had some really talented teams but with little imagination on offense, the program has created an environment where making the playoffs is considered a great season. just wondering what might have been?

  29. I check in on this site infrequently on weekends so I apologize for being late to yet another debate packed with cheap shots, baseless facts and grievous innaccuracies — all tossed out in anonymity, of course. For the record, we never reported that Christian McCain played for the U19 team. We wrote that he is a Gater, was in Orlando and transferred when he came home. Specifically:

“In August, Kowalewski’s 19-and-under Gaters team won a national AAU tournament in Orlando, Fla. Four days after returning home and just days before the start of the 2008-09 school year, Christian McCain, one of the Gaters’ players, transferred from Page to Northern Guilford.”

Could that have been written more clearly? In hindsight, yes. Is it innaccurate? No. I stand behind the reporting for that story and the subsequent stories. If you’ve been the subject of any stories and you believe the paper has been inaccurate or unfair, feel free to call, e-mail me or post a question at the stories on our site. Thanks.

  30. Since this is an on-going investigation we are going to have to be very careful what is said in our comment boxes here at the site.

Some comments may be considered information that might hinder the investigation and others might be deemed inappropriate.

We have to watch calling out certain people by name that might become a part of this investigation and this is a very sensitive subject now throughout the county and we will see what happens as this week develops.

We appreciate your comments but some readers will take exception to what is being said here and we have to be very careful.

We will start a new thread near the top of the home page today and might be time to move on from this current thread.

I am sure all of the local media outlets will continue to follow this story.

We don’t have all of the answers here but we are open for fair discussion.

Many of the things that you the readers are talking about will come out in this investigation but they have to come out in the appropriate manner.

  31. Robert, thank you for responding. It is nice to get some clarity and facts. You tend to see some rumors posted by people not using their real name. Thanks for coming forward.

  32. Well said Kirk.

Robert Bell has worked very hard covering this story for the News and Record.

  33. To Norteast Parent-My last sentence was “But please know this goes on at every school whether we know bout it or not.” And I also said “I know more on N.E but it doesn’t matter everyone will just say this is about Northern.” I know first hand your statement is false. Thats all I will say. And that is why I am a former parent.

One thing I have learned by being associated with athetics not everyone is clean. I have yet to meet someone who goes strictly by the books. They may have the kids best interest but they dont go by the rules. It doesnt get any better at the next level either.

  34. Robert Bell what is the date of the article. If you read your own writing you will see you reported wrong. You and the record take cheaps shots all the time and list it as reporting. report this. Why are Students leaving page? Does page have a gang problem witthin the school? Does page have students leaving every morning after the buses drop them off? Does page have underage students smoking at the parking lot entrance everyday? Thoes are the facts. You indeed siad that McCain played on the 19U gater team. You are another microphone bully telling a lie while no one can answer back the same way you put it out there. Your just another coward. If you are so sure When did the article print?

  35. Why did this come about Page? What is the NG fascination with the Pirates other than recruiting their athletes?

  36. To former NE parent—What sports are we talking about? I can assure you the coaches my kid has are totally above board.

  37. Why,

They same month that page’s high profile player left for northern their where 4 non athletes who left for northern also. Can anyone on this site name one of them. I’m sorry 3. One was from Northeast. Where did page’s running back play last year. Andy do you know the answer to these questions. It appears the the press is written only about Athletes. I know Andy this is a sports blog, but lets be fair. Why would non athletes leave another school any? Could the school itself be a reason? Yes. Could sports be a reason? yes. Could recruiting be a reason? Yes. If the answer to all 3 questions is yes , why is recruiting the only thing they beleive. People sometimes take the route of least resistance. If the answer is anything but recruiting then GCS has bigger problems then Northern. It reminds me of the scene in the movie a FEW GOOD MEN. The doctor had to be right because if he missed a heart condition on a soldier and he died it would look bad for him. The same here. These kids had to be recruited because if they weren’t then GCS would make Mr. Lawson the highest paid custodian in America. Lets say to the tune of 10 million plus. Lets hope GCS has an outlet, but some Board members and GCS Administrators will not survive the fallout. Cant wait till next election. kiss your seat goodbye Ms.__________!!!!!

    Thanks Andy

  38. A witness saw and heard NE Basketball Coach Hunter tell a member of the Neal family that he would love to have both him and his brother at NE. The Neal family member’s reply…”You illegally recruiting?” Hunter’s reply…. silence.

Not so squeeky clean are ya NE?

  39. Robert Bell, here is the Article in Question.

Now, if you say that this Article doesn’t imply that Christian McCain played for the 19U team, you’re as ignorant as the GCS members that believe the article well enough to question Northern’s officials about him playing on the 19U team. You can hide behind the position of your commas, but most people who read it thought exactly what you implied, he played for the 19u team. If you can’t do better than that you are not very good. Write it in plain english and say what you mean. I did, and I will say it again. You are not very good!

  40. the ISSUE IS NOT TRANSFERS….IT IS RECRUITING!!!! THAT IS THE ISSUE!!! When the coaches at a particular school have a reputation for it everywhere they go you don’t think that maybe that is what is going on? Hell, I heard recently that NG just got another one of Page’s studs officially. Stop acting like people are stupid. IT isn’t hard to see what is going on. They are recruiting and trying to defend it with the smoke screen of “maybe it is their old school.” That is BS. There are plenty of people that succeed and every school that kids are leaving. NG doesn’t have problems now? Not according to some, and even if they don’t wait until they have a full student body and all the selected transfers cycle out. They will be no better than any other school just like they are right now.

  41. every school has bad apples, and every school has good kids. if your son/daughter is hanging out with the wrong kids then yes, you are going to see problems. but there is A LOT to like about a school like Grimsley or Page. Diversity being one, and good reputable academic programs being another. Stop acting like those schools are gang habitats when that is not the case.

  42. Hey Blind the only facts in your statement that can be proven is kids do succeed at other schools and the former page kid is a stud. maybe he will invite you to watch one of his pro games. I think not millionaires dont read this BS.

  43. Blind Facts,

Its obvious you are not a millionaire, and I am one who reads this BS. My point to you is that this kid will not be playing in the NFL, so you should try hanging on someone else’s jock strap for a free ride. I will agree with one of your comments though, and that is that kids can succeed at other schools. Well, for this particular player, how many schools does it take? Someone else mentioned this and said that it will be his third school in three years. So, open your eyes and get real facts.

Transfers are not a problem if its done correctly. The RB that you are referring to, who came to Page via NE, wasn’t even playing RB during the first few weeks of practice. The coaches actually switched him to RB later on into practices and by the start of scrimmages, because they found out that this kid could actually run the ball really well. So, tell me this, if this kid was recruited from Page, then why didn’t they know how good this kid was at RB? That is right, because you can’t tell me that they recruited. To the player who is leaving Page, most of the players say “GOOD RIDDANCE!”

  44. If I am a coach can I not make a respectful comment to a player saying, “I wish I had a couple of players on my team like you and your brother”, and it not be a recruiting statement?

It would seem it could be considered a comment of praise or respect and it would then not be considered recruiting. Maybe a bit naive here, but let’s all be honest here what can you say or not say to a student-athlete that borders on the lines of recruiting and do we have a Guilford County Athletics Handbook with the listed by-laws that we are supposed to follow?????

On another subject within the academic realm, I have heard of teachers at one school that have sent their children to another school within the cross-over boundaries of a school district.

The reason given was that the school the student was in, was considered an at-risk discipline school and that the parent/teacher wanted their child to attend what they considered to be a safer school.

  45. Well said Andy, its only the athlete family can’t make an a honest decision about there kid without it being recruiting.

Mist, ignorance becomes you. Page coaches knew durning summer workouts this kid from NE was comimg. I’m not saying they recruited him, but you really need to be an insider before you open your mouth.

The stud player was a freshman at Akien, SC when his parents moved to NC. Once again you don’t know what you are talking about. When his parents moved to Kernersville, all of Page’s coaches knew about that, and asked him to stay at page. Thats not recruiting because he attended page, so coached could talk to him. What is illegal is when they learned his sister was not the guardian the said nothing until the letter went to county. The head coach kicked him off for displinary reasons is a crock. He acted the same way his Soph year, only he lived in pages district and they would not forfeit any games. He used his position and lied about the reason.
However three schools in 3 years is correct, but understand of why he moved is wrong. I’m sure you are hungry, its hard to eat with your foot in your mouth. I didn’t respond to the other writer because thay have know idea why he moved. Now you know.

  46. Get out of the mist,

Thank you for your “inside” information. Sounds like you are choking on this stud’s jock strap as well. Also, thank you for you comments about me. I wouldn’t really say ignorance though, because it is more like arrogance. You see, I’m actually eating some leftover sweet potato casserole that I got at Ruth Cris and not my foot. Plus, I’ll open my mouth as I so choose to, because I entertain more people in one minute than you would in ten years. Again, your comments to me are laughable and forgettable. You want to know why? Because tomorrow, I’ll still be me and you will still be you, and that to me is even more funny.

  47. Hey mist did you read the front page of the news and record? I think that stud left just in time. I would bet your cassarole there will be more to follow. I perfer Chophouse though. Have a good night. Oh in case you did know Gunman on Page’s campus. And you all thought I was a cheap shot, page hater. It could happen on any campus the bloggers might say. Fact is it didnt it happen at PAGE!

  48. hey get out of the mist,

If you were around the previous year this player you are talking about showedhis tail on several occasions. One time another player even whipped his tail for it on the practice field.

Then there was another time that he walked off and quit but the coaches let him come back and miss a game and clean the locker room etc.

I guess they weren’t being fair to him though poor kid the whole world is out to get you.
