Update on Jay Canty formerly of Ragsdale HS

This was sent to us today from one of our loyal readers Mike and we say, thanks Mike.

The article is by Tom Berry at the High Point Enterprise and you can aquire the article by going to southernheadlines.com and then you will need to go through a registration process, but we have the lowdown coming up for you from Tom Berry long-time writer at the HPE.

The info that we(Greensborosports.com) have been receiving tells us that Jay Canty(formerly of Ragsdale HS) went out to Kansas, stayed on week and then came back to the area and traveled to Orlando recently with the CP3 Team for the AAU Nationals.

Our info also tells us that Jay Canty has already visited Oak Ridge Military Academy, picked up an application and plans on enrolling if everything can be worked out for the upcoming fall semester.

Here’s the word from today from Tom Berry of the High Point Enterprise and again thanks to Mike for bringing this to our attention:

JAMESTOWN – Ragsdale basketball star Jay Canty will not return to the school for his senior year, head coach Craig Shoemaker confirmed on Friday.

“He won’t be back at Ragsdale,” Shoemaker said.

Canty’s future destination is uncertain. The 6-foot-5 swingman, generally rated as one of the nation’s top 150 players in the high school class of 2010, reportedly spent time in Kansas earlier in the summer and is considering attending a private school in the state.

Shoemaker said he has not talked to Canty since the last day of school in June. The coach said he has seen him once, during the team’s first scrimmage of the summer.

“I’ve heard that he’s back in the area, but I’m not certain,” Shoemaker said. “His phone number has changed. I’ve got some letters from colleges that I need to drop off to him.”

Shoemaker said there was no truth to a rumor that Canty might transfer to Westchester Country Day School.

“Westchester is not in the mix at all, to be honest,” he said.

Shoemaker said academics is the reason Canty believes he needs to attend a private school as a senior.

“He’s got to get working on his grades,” the coach said. “He wants to attend a four-year school, and he’s got to improve his grades if he wants to do that.”

Canty could not be reached for comment. He spent most of the last week in Orlando, Fla., competing in the AAU Nationals as a member of the CP3 All-Stars.

“I don’t have anything else to report,” said Shoemaker, who believes an AAU coach has been steering Canty to Kansas. “Everything has been hush, hush. There’s a lot about the situation that I just don’t know.”

Canty made a verbal commitment to High Point University last October, then pulled back the commitment in March when head coach Bart Lundy was fired. According to Rivals.com, High Point, with new head coach Scott Cherry, remains one of the schools that Canty is considering.

Others are Boston College, Buffalo, Elon, Marquette, Providence, Virginia Commonwealth and Xavier.

Lundy, HPU’s head coach for six seasons, has taken a job at Marquette as director of basketball operations.

Canty averaged 22 ppg as a junior at Ragsdale, which finished 26-2 overall and won the Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference title. He can play shooting guard or small forward and is rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals.com.

  1. I wish Jay nothing but the best. He was a fun and exciting player to watch the last three seasons at Ragsdale. He was set to have a monster senior season (and probably will wherever he plays) at Ragsdale. I hate I won’t get to see it.

My daughter has chatted with him a few times this summer and he had mentioned to her about maybe going to a school in Kansas.

ORMA? I hope not but if thats his choice I wish him luck. That is a circus he would be best to avoid IMO.

  2. LET HIM BREATHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!STOP THE RUMORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HE WILL END UP WHERE HE ENDS UP…. LET HIM ENJOY HIS LIFE PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Most people do wish Jay the best, wherever he ends up. He’s a nice young man. Sounds like he has been enjoying life. Hopefully he gets it done in the classroom so that he can reach his full potential on and off the court.

  4. Is anyone getting this. Why are the best players not being educated in GCS. Northern had study hall twice a week and if a player had a D on their report card they couldn’t start or play first quarter. Page carried a ineligible player two years ago on the team until after christmas. Now you tell me, was there a player cut that had better grades to save a spot for him even though he could not try out. Ask Page and Ragsdale to educate there players first. If the greade were that bad why is he playing . Lets ask Coach Kent from Page, And Coach Shoemaker from Ragsdale about bad grades and allowing kids to play. Tackle that one people if you have the guts. Comment on that Andy

  5. Where are you getting this information? Is it credible or just more unfounded rumors?
