MAYHEW, VALMONT EARN WEEKLY HONORS for N.C. A&T

MAYHEW, VALMONT EARN WEEKLY HONORS

Aggies will play four home games next season

GREENSBORO, September 14, 2009 – The excitement of playing his first game amongst cheering fans wearing blue and gold at Aggie Stadium didn’t distract sophomore running back Mike Mayhew from excelling Saturday night against Norfolk State.

Mayhew (5-10, 205, Charlotte, NC) rushed for 87 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries to lead the Aggies to a 17-13 win over the Spartans. His effort earned MEAC Rookie of the Week.

After the game, Mayhew gave credit to his offensive line, and one of his offensive linemen is sharing the weekly honor stage with him. Sophomore Jason Valmont earned MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Week after helping the Aggies earn 4.1 yards per carry.

Mayhew earned 56 of his 87 yards on one drive. Mayhew’s signature drive occurred on the Aggies first possession of the second half. Mayhew carried the ball on all five plays (there was a 5-yard penalty on NSU during the drive) of the drive and capped it with an 8-yard touchdown to give the Aggies the lead for good.

“My linemen did the work for me’’ said Mayhew, who finished with 87 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. “They really took charge on that drive. All I had to do was get to the hole and stay on my feet.”

Valmont was a key part of that equation. Valmont (6-3, 315, Lake Charles, La.) recorded four pancakes and cleared the way for Mayhew during the Aggies first drive of the second half.

Only one Aggie received a weekly MEAC honor last season. The Aggies have compiled three weekly honors over the first two weeks of the season with Jarrell Herring Defensive Player of the Week honors after Week 1.
