GREENSBORO — Northern Guilford proved to have too many weapons and made all the big plays en route to a 48-16 rout of Western Alamance.
The Nighthawks (10-1 overall, 7-0 Mid-State 3-A Conference) had big games from Mohamed Khellah, who finished with 126 rushing yards and two touchdowns as well as a 44-yard interception return for a touchdown, and Keenan Allen, who finished with 115 all-purpose yards, one receiving touchdown and a 78-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that proved to be a game-changing play.
Trailing at the half 14-9, the Warriors (8-3, 5-2) pulled off an onside kick, kicking the ball off one of Northern Guilford’s blockers and recovering the ball. They then went on an 11-play drive that covered 53 yards and took up almost half the quarter, capping the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run from Dominique Bridges.
And then it all went downhill from there.
On the ensuing kickoff, Western Alamance purposely kicked the ball short, hoping to keep the ball from Allen. But, Allen was ready and waiting for this and returned the kickoff to the end zone.
The Eastern Guilford Wildcats defeated McMicheal 38-19 on Friday night, clinching fourth place in the Mid-State 3-A Conference.
The victory in the regular-season finale also guarantees a playoff berth in the Class 3-A state for the Wildcats (4-7 overall, 4-3 Mid-State 3-A).
“All the seniors played hard on their last home game,†said Eastern Guilford coach Scott Loosemore.
The senior class is led by quarterback Josh Morehead, who finished with 242 total yards and rushing touchdowns of 47 and 34 yards. “We came out here and we knew what we had to do. Now we just have to look forward to the playoffs and keep our head on straight.â€
Even though the Wildcats coasted, they committed 12 penalties for 85 yards.
“All year long we’ve had problems making mistakes but (this game) we were just able to overcome them,†Morehead said.
Had the opportunity to view the Eastern Guilford Wildcats this past Friday night. The Seniors were very focused on winning that game and making to the playoffs. They looked very impressive, despite having some big penalties. In the past six weeks they have played from behind, overcome big deficits, played from a lead, and started to force some big turnovers. They are 4-2 in those games. I would not be surprised to see this dark horse team make a big run in the playoffs.
