Helen Terry ready to bury the competition down at Charleston Southern

The MVP of last year’s girl’s 3-A State Championship basketball game, Helen Terry, is off to great start as a freshman down at Charleston Southern in Charleston, South Carolina and Helen hit for 10 points and dished out 8 assists in her first collegiate game, a game in which she started for the Buccaneers/Bucs….

Here’s the word on the Bucs and the former Dudley Panther, Helen Terry:

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Katie Tull scored a game-high 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting and four players scored in double figures as the Charleston Southern women’s basketball team defeated Limestone College 90-54 in the season opener for the Buccaneers Friday night at CSU Field House.

CSU (1-0) starts the season on a positive note for the third-consecutive year, with this being the second-straight season-opening victory over the Lady Saints.

Tull knocked down a three-point basket in the opening minute, and Charleston Southern never trailed in the contest.

The only real trouble CSU would face was when Whitney Todd, Limestone’s leading returning scorer from last season, scored on a layup at the 8:38 mark of the opening period to cut CSU’s lead to 24-21. A barrage of baskets and stellar defense following the LC rally propelled the Buccaneers on a 22-8 run to end the first, and the home team entered the break with a 46-29 halftime advantage.

Charleston Southern would gradually increase its lead in the second off by equipping a more effective transition game into the mix, and the Lady Saints had no answer for the balanced offensive attack as CSU would go on to win by a decisive score of 90-54.

The victory was capped off in the final seconds of the game when Helen Terry drove the lane and threw a behind-the-back pass to Kori Penick for an easy layup for the final two points of the game for CSU.

Terry’s debut wearing the blue and gold was a successful one as she earned the start in her first collegiate game and responded with a very solid performance. She scored 10 points on just 4-of-13 shooting, but she also had eight assists and five rebounds, while only turning the ball over once.

Tull went 5-for-8 from three-point land and was the only CSU player to knock down a three as the team finished 5-of-20. Ali Schwagmeyer and LeChell Rush both had seven rebounds and the duo combined for 22 points.

Kelsey Wasmer was just 4-for-11 from the field and failed to knock down a three-point attempt, but she did go 5-for-6 from the free-throw line and finished with 13 points.

Shay Jones also made her CSU debut and went 3-for-6 from the field. She scored seven points and had four steals in 20 minutes of action.

Lakeitha Alston also contributed nine points and six rebounds and Lydia Johnson added eight points and four boards. The tandem went a combined 7-of-11 from the field off the bench.

CSU shot 49 percent form the field and held Limestone to just 29 percent. Todd led LC with 14 points and Tia Williams added 11.

The staunch Buccaneer defense forced 34 turnovers and the team outrebounded the Lady Saints 46-42.

Charleston Southern returns to action Nov. 20-21 as the team plays host to both University of Texas at San Antonio and Mercer University in the Lowcountry Women’s Classic.

  1. Good to see Helen doing well. I have always enjoyed seeing her play. But I wouldnt say all coach b’s girls produce. This is the first graduate that I have heard in a while that has continued to do well on the collegiate level as a freshman. I know Jocelyn Williams is doing well at mars hill but the other graduates I hear has shuffled schools. I am glad to hear most are continuing to play at their new schools though.

Andy, any news on Paris Alston, Elisha Hairston, Lisa Archie or Archer and other area girls?

  2. Paris Alston is playing for SC State, she’s putting up some numbers in her freshman year. Jocelyn Williams is playing for Mars Hill but I heard from a very reliable source that she damage her other acl and is basically done with basketball, but she is still on the roster. Eliesha Hairston & Lisa Archie are both playing for Elon. Look for Hairston under the name of “Lei Lei Hairston”. Kendra Porter (who played for Dudley) is now @ Roanoke College. Nikki Kee ( played for Dudley) is still @ Winston Salem State. Sierra Little (played for Dudley) I have no clue. Trumae Lucas (played for Grimsley) @ University of Florida and getting alot of minutes. This would really make a nice thread Andy, ” where are they now”.

  3. On Paris Alston from Southeast Guilford and now at South Carolina State:

Orangeburg, SC—For the first time since the 2005-06 season the SC State women’s basketball team won its season-opener as the Lady Bulldogs defeated Savannah State, 60-50 Sunday. The non-conference matchup was contested in the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center on the campus of SC State University.

SC State (1-0) owned a 20-point lead over the Savannah State (1-1) late in the first half and enjoyed a 17-point spread heading into the locker-rooms at the half, 38-21.

Savannah State began the second half on a 12-4 run to pull to within nine, 42-33, and would cut the lead to four, 48-44, midway through the second but could not get any closer. The Lady Bulldogs increased their lead to 12 with a little over a minute remaining and would go on to victory.

“It’s always good to open the season with a victory,” said second year head coach Doug Robertson. “We did some good things and I saw some things that we need to work on, but overall it was a good win.”

The Lady Bulldogs had three players to score in double-figures, led by senior Sophilia Hipps with 18 (6-of-6 from the charity stripe). Junior Joi Walker and freshman Paris Alston contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively. Walker and freshman Tiana Hemphill led the team in rebounding with eight each.
