ASHEBORO — There were times when it got ragged, but the end result was the same in both games as Asheboro High School opened its basketball season at home against former Mid-Piedmont Conference member Southeast Guilford.
The Blue Comets surged ahead of the Falcons early and built a large lead they held throughout in a 62-52 victory for the boys. That completed the sweep after the girls squad managed to hang on in a precarious finish for a 63-55 win in the opener.
Asheboro’s boys steadily added to its lead through the first eight minutes, leading 17-12 heading into the second period. But it was at the end of the half where the Blue Comets made their mark.
Saegan Hilliard hit a 3-pointer and finished a 9-point run with a jumper after baskets by Chris Pratt and Nigel Shamburger. Tevin Johnson’s runner by SEG ended the run, but AHS (1-0) led by 10 at the break.
“I thought they played hard and competed throughout,†AHS coach Brian Nance said. “That’s going to have to be our mark this year.â€
Dayshun Jones then helped put the finishing touches on the win, scoring 14 of his team-high 22 points in the second half as AHS’ lead hit as many as 19, hovering around 15-17 until Nance cleared his bench and the Falcons scored late to cut the final margin.
Hilliard finished with 21 points and Pratt added nine.
