With Henson, Sanborn and Bonner busting, Guilford might be better this year than last

Fourth-ranked Guilford scores 83-66 men’s hoops win at N.C. Wesleyan

Rocky Mount, NC – Fourth-ranked Guilford College shot an impressive 51.7 percent from the floor en route to an 83-66 victory over homestanding North Carolina Wesleyan Wednesday night in Everett Gymnasium. The Quakers forged a 44-34 lead at the half and did not look back in moving to a perfect 4-0 on the season. With the loss, the Battling Bishops drop to 2-6 overall.

The first half featured eight lead changes and four ties before the Quakers pulled away and took a double-digit lead. Wesleyan led 27-24 with 6:41 remaining only to see Guilford put together a 20-7 run to close out the period.

In the second half, the Bishops got no closer than seven points as the Quakers knocked down several key shots that prevented a momentum shift. Guilford connected on 6-of-8 three-point attempts in the period, while holding Wesleyan to 1-of-13 shooting behind the arc.

Guilford’s Clay Henson led all scorers with 23 points and five assists. Teammate Rhett Bonner chipped in 17, 15 in the second half. Tyler Sanborn had 13 points, 14 rebounds, and six blocks on the night.

For the Bishops, Trey Drake and Jarmel Arrington had 12 points apiece. Fellow senior Lamont Stokes turned in a solid all-around performance with 10 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

The Bishops will now break for exams before returning to action on December 13th and 14th at the Briggs Elliott December Classic hosted by Randolph-Macon. Wesleyan will take on the nationally-ranked College of Wooster on the 13th at 4:00 p.m. Guilford heads to Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday (12/5) for a 2:00 p.m. Old Dominion Athletic Conference game.
