Quakers grab two wins as men and women from Guilford both post victories

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Rhett Bonner (Yadkinville, N.C./North Forsyth (Presbyterian)) scored 19 of his career- and game-high 28 points in the second half to rally visiting Guilford College to a 77-72 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s basketball win over Hampden-Sydney College Wednesday night.

Guilford (5-1, 1-1 ODAC) is ranked seventh in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll.

The Tigers (4-3, 1-1 ODAC) drilled eight of their 12 three-pointers in the first half to open a 38-30 halftime lead. The Tigers’ Ben Jessee opened Hampden-Sydney’s second-half scoring with another trifecta that opened an 11-point Tigers’ lead.

A 10-0 Quakers’ run early in the second half got Guilford back into the game. Back-to-back Bonner three-pointers midway through the frame tied the game at 50 and gave the Quakers’ the lead for good at 53-50 with 11:40 left in regulation. A Harrison George (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville) bucket with 1:59 left made it a 70-68 game, but the Tigers drew no closer and the Quakers made all four free throws in the final five seconds to preserve the win.

In addition to Bonner’s second-half outburst, sophomore Gabriel Lowder (Yadkinville, N.C./North Forsyth) netted 12 points in the second period en route to a career-high 14 points. Tyler Sanborn (Mount Airy, N.C./Elkin) notched his fourth double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Clay Henson (Glen Alpine, N.C./Freedom) also scored 12 for Guilford.

Turner King (Roanoke, Va./Roanoke Catholic) led five Tigers in double-figure scoring with 13 points. Colin O’Neill added 12 points and Jessee finisher with 11. Rookie Harrison George kept Hampden-Sydney in the game with 10 points, all in the second half, and a team-high six rebounds.

The Quakers are back in action Dec. 16 against visiting Maryville (Tenn.) College at 7:00 p.m.
