Just left the Smith High School gymnasium and it was sold out, standing room(SRO) only for Dudley-Smith….

I got there at halftime of the boys game and had just left Grimsley where they had already completed the WG-Grimsley games….Grimsley boys/WG girls/Grimsley JV boys winners and at Smith it was Dudley winning/taking all four games from the Golden Eagles…

Ragsdale had been behind entire game, trailing 41 – 38 going to final quarter. Beniah Wise hit two threes and a layup to start the fourth to give Ragsdale their first lead at 46 – 41 and were only up by three at 51 – 48 with 4:20 to go when the foul shooting parade began. One referee took over the game and from that point on Ragsdale shot 22 foul shots in the last 4 minutes hitting 15 of them. Two technicals called on Parkland and the same referee called all of them. He even threw the Ragsdale scorekeeper out of the game when he asked for clarifications on who fouls were called on. Never seen anything like it…Completely out of control. Anyway…Ragsdale went on to win their first Piedmont Triad Conf game and are now (3–5) overall. Beniah Wise had 20 points including 4 treys and Kalik Parker had 17 with three long balls.

  1. Pj hairstion played ONE minute of the fourth quarter. went out with an injured foot. he could have easily went for 40+ points, he was just starting to heat up before he left. his future teammates of UNC were at the game tonight with former dudley grad Will Graves to watch PJ put on a show.. john henson, dexter strickland, leslie mcdonald, justin watts, and ed davis were among others at the game.

  2. You are pretty much right on the money about PJ. He sat out pretty much the entire 4th quarter and guys like Sam Hunt started lighting it up outside….

  3. Thanks to all the coaches that sent us scores tonight and also to all that passed the finals along to us. We even got some info from some of our local newspaper reporters and thanks again for spreading the news on the basketball games…..

  4. Our girls really BEAST on Mcmichael and we are ready to run the table in our conference. The rest of the State and conference had better get ready because we can score and defend just like we did against Mcmichael 75-7. Samantha is definately player of the year not only in the conference but also in the area. We should have at least three and maybe four on the first team All Conference Team and at least one or two on the First Team All Area. Burlington Williams and Rockingham will probably land the other all team performers. GO KNIGHTHAWKS

  5. Carter Gourley at Grimsley is in a bit of a shooting slump….Coach Corbett is working with him and trying to let him play through it and Carter led Grimsley on Monday in the NEG game with 9 points…

The regulars other than PG Burrell Brown did not start last night for GHS and they came in the game with 1:09 left in the first period…Carter hit two free throws, his only points of the game to ice it at the end….

It will all work out, you have play through it….

  6. No one took it easy on Northern Guilford when their inaugural team was only freshman and sophomores, therefore, they shouldn’t take it easy on anyone.

  7. Our Panther girls showed Smith whose BOSS in the Conference. Page don’t think becasue yall beat Reynolds and Reynolds beat us that you can hang. Coach B don’t play that.

  8. Northern Observer

I agree. I remember when Dudley would run the score up on us and would be laughing at the same time. They would keep their whole entire first team in the game even when the game was more than decided.

  9. When Dudley was blowing people out by thirty every night last year nobody said anything. Now that Northern Guilford girls are doing it its a problem? well everybody needs to get over it because its going to be like this for the rest of the season..rockingham watch out our girls are coming!!!!

  10. Northern, like any other team is only as GOOD as the sum of their players. One good player does not a championship team make. Hat’s off to Coffer, because she is good, but not the best I’ve seen.

  11. Northern Fan,

I don’t suppose Eastern Guilford should have any first team? They DID only beat you by EIGHTEEN! and Rockingham by TWENTY THREE! But hey, it’s all good.

  12. There’s a big difference between 30 points and 60 points. Respect the game and your opponents. There is a way to keep the score respectful and work on your team offense as well – make 10 passes before scoring, set up your team offense and take away fast break points, and play your bench. It’s great that Northern is a great team this year and I wish them the best of luck throughout the season.

  13. Great comment ‘you got to be kidding me’

When a team beats another team like this it makes people want to see them get it right back.

Northern Fan – why sink to the Dudley level?

  14. There was plenty said last year.

There was a big article in the Newspaper last year on this with Dudley and some other teams.

Yes it seems crazy….however on Dudley’s side last year…They had been to the Regionals and a couple of finals over the last 4-5 years. Dudley would have a commanding lead and was unable to finish the game therefore losing in the regionals those years.

Last year if I remember the article…the focus was to keep playing no matter the score.
This motto worked for the Panthers in the Regionals and State Championship last year. In the Regional Championship Dudley had a lead and the team started coming back the difference was Dudley never stopped playing hard therefore never letting the team back in striking difference.

You also have to remember that Dudley was a running team…if you attempted to slow them down to run set plays with 10 passes as the suggestion was…straight turnovers.

I feel for those teams that are not competitive. But in the palyoffs teams have to be able to finish.

  15. What all of you critics don’t know about Northern’s game is that Northern sat in a zone for 3 quarters, but McMichael could not shoot. Northern only has 10 players and the bench played most of the game. Honestly, Northern could have scored 150, but was nice to keep it at 75. You had to be there to understand. They did everything but stand still and play 3 players instead of 5. Not a fun game to watch!

  16. I was at both the Grimsley-NE game and the Grimsley -WG game…In defense of Carter Gourley, he didnt get that many shot attempts in either game….Teams are preparing better to defend good players…I doubt if he got 10 shots total in both games…same for Krechaun, coaches know that he’s their leading scorer, and let’s be honest, these guys are not big kids…They cant rise over kids and score baskets…A lot of it also has to do with getting some easy baskets; if the point guard is not willing to hit ahead and let these guys make plays in the open court, at best they will get 4-5 decent looks in a game…and then look at the offense; Grimsley runs the same stuff all night long; it’s easy to figure out how to keep carter from getting good looks; but, kudos to carter for making two big free throws down the stretch last night; incidentally, those were his only two points of the night ! ! !

  17. Northwest Guilford 74, Glenn 63
Northwest Guilford remained consistent in each quarter and captured a win over Glenn. Reed Lucas accumulated 16 points and six rebounds while Zach Ellwood finished with seven rebounds to go along with his 14 points for the Vikings.

    Northwest Guilford 16 20 17 21 — 74
    Glenn 16 14 9 24 — 63
Northwest Guilford (3-3) — Reed Lucas 16, Zach Ellwood 14, Duncan Everett 11, Kyle Berger 8, Keaton Haack 8, Matt Pawlowski 7, Julian Sampah 4, Hunter Clary 3, Kyle Vebber 3.
Glenn (4-2) — Harry Robinson 11, Michael Pegg 10, Tyler Lee 10, Matt Hodges 9, LaMaurice Williams 8, Clavis Simmons 6, Najee Hairston 5, Trey Lofton 3, Bryant Culler 1.

ELLWOOD, LUCAS AND EVERETT? OFF NITE FOR CLARY AND VEBBER

  18. Northern played their bench 85% of the game. McMichael couldnt bring the ball up the court nor hit a basket. Northen did go easy on them. If they played like they normally do, the score could have easily gone over 100 like they did to Bartlett Yancey last year. I dont know who Northern Fan is but they do not represent the girls basketball team and the respect they have for other teams. Every team in the conference will be a contender and they go into every game with that mentality. The girls do not have a big head or care about who gets what honors. They just want to be competitive. Its the adults who create this bickering and hatred among each other. Its a shame that the kids have more class than the so-called adults/parents.

  19. I saw the western- grimsley game and hoops fan is right on. Grimsley runs the same stuff all game. Carter is realy struggling right now and its so odd because he started out the season with 28 against nw! I saw him play his freshman and junior years when they played page and he lit them up. The kid can play but it seems like hes feeling the pressure of being the only senior, and his games taking a hit. We shouldnt get on this kid but pull for him to come out of this and i am a page fan, but I hate to see kids struggling.(although i would hate for him to come out of the slump against us on friday lol) Lets wish the kid luck, and those were some huge free throws he made ffrom coming off the bench cold. Anyways, Go pirates!

  20. Looks like Eastern should be able to beat McMichael 93-7, since they beat NG by 18.-Hope they are on Eastern’s schedule. Maybe Carolina will do an endowment game with them. NG needs to pat there stats against very, very weak teams to be able to sleep at night. Very nice coaching job Ms. Furlong.

  21. I was not at the game, but I have found Coach Furlough to be a first-class coach and person and she loves the game of basketball and she is devoted to her Nighthawk team….

Don’t know how the game with McMichael went down, because I was not there, but my guess is that there wasn’t much Coach could do about it and it just got out of hand due to the weakness of the McMichael team.

It’s hard to tell your girls to try not to score…..If you just flat out lay down, it hurts the integrity of the game….How do you teach not to play hard?????

After this round, maybe NG will approach it different next time, sometimes you don’t know how a game will unfold until it is right on top of you, especially when you meet a team for the first during the conference season…..

I trust Tom’s judgement and he stated earlier that there wasn’t much that Northern could have done under the circumstances…..

Now is the time to start getting for the Friday night games and let’s hope all of our teams/players get a good shot or two in before the holiday break and that the parents will enjoy watching their kids play and leave the shots to their kids on the court…..

  22. McMichael is in EG’s conference so they will get to play them twice. Coach Furlough called the dogs off in the first quarter. NG came out in a 3/4 quarter press and Coach called that off after a few minutes. She sat back in a zone the rest of the game and didn’t push the tempo. McMichael was leading the game 2-0. They had 3 free throws and then scored another basket in the last minute. They must have had about 40 shots. I felt bad for the McMichael girls. I hope they improve and find some success.
Anybody who knows Coach Furlough realizes that she is a first rate coach and a first class person. I don’t know what she could have done to make it any better.

  23. the western vs grimsley game neil spinks #33 for western got in the game and scored all his points in the 2nd quarter and didnt play no more the rest of the game i think if he would of play the 2nd half he would of made a difference in that game cause nobody could stop him.
