#6 Guilford takes over Tennessee: Sanborn and Henson hot

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Seniors Tyler Sanborn and Clay Henson combined for 51 points in Guilford College’s 71-58 victory over Huntingdon College Saturday in the opening round of the Lon Varnell Classic at the University of the South.

Sanborn, a 6-10 senior center, totalled 27 points and 14 rebounds, both game highs. The Quakers (7-1) are ranked sixth in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll. Henson added 24 points, a game-high six assists and four steals for Guilford.

Henson had 13 first-half points and Sanborn added 12 points and 10 boards to spark Guilford to a 34-22 halftime lead. The Hawks (2-5) stayed in the game thanks to five second-half three-pointers and pulled to within 51-46 on an Ephraim Hudson trifecta with 8:39 left in regulation.

The Quakers answered with an 8-0 run, capped by a Sanborn dunk, to regain a 59-46 edge with 6:21 remaining. Huntingdon trimmed the deficit to seven points on two Hudson free throws with 1:46 to play, but Guilford scored the game’s final six points and did not allow a field goal in the final 3:27.

Rhett Bonner added 11 points and three three-pointers for the Quakers, who shot an uncharacteristic 51.9 percent from the free-throw line.

Leon Frazier’s nine points led the Hawks’ scoring. Jack Montgomery contributed five points and a team-best 13 rebounds, seven off the offensive glass.

Guilford wraps up tournament play Sunday (12/20) at 2:00 p.m. (EST) against Rust College, a 74-67 winner over host Sewanee in Saturday’s opening game.
