Guilford gets it done as they knock the Rust off: “Quaker Time”, in Tennessee

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Tyler Sanborn scored 27 points and added 10 rebounds to lead Guilford College past Rust College, 96-72, Sunday in the second and final round of the Lon Varnell Classic at the University of the South.

Clay Henson added 16 points for the Quakers (8-1), who won their fourth straight game and posted a 2-0 record in the 14th annual tournament named for the former Sewanee coach.

Both Henson and Sanborn represented Guilford on the all-tournament team. Guilford is ranked sixth in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll.

The Quakers jumped out to a 52-30 halftime lead over the Bearcats (5-8), who played their third game in as many days. Sanborn made eight of his first 10 shots from the floor and had 20 points by halftime. Guilford shot 56.5 percent from the floor in its highest scoring output of the season. In addition to Sanborn and Henson, junior Martin Stephenson added a season-high 13 points on six-of-seven field-goal shooting.

The Quakers’ Rhett Bonner collected eight points, six boards and a game-high five assists. Guilford enjoyed a 40-25 rebounding edge. Freshman Markeith Wilson led four Rust students in double-figure scoring with 15 points off the bench. Arsenio Nuckles added 13 points and five assists.

The Quakers return to action Dec. 29-30 at the Marietta Shrine Tournament in Ohio. Guilford meets Ohio Wesleyan University Dec. 29 at 3:00 p.m.
