#6 Guilford College stops Ohio Wesleyan 79-72 at Marietta College

MARIETTA, Ohio – Tyler Sanborn posted his fifth straight double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds in Guilford College’s 79-72 win over Ohio Wesleyan University in Tuesday‘s opening round of the 39th annual Marietta Shrine Tournament at Marietta College.

Guilford (9-1), ranked sixth in the current D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, advance to Wednesday’s championship against the host Pioneers, a 74-67 winner over Grove City College in Tuesday’s second contest. Marietta is coached by third-year boss Jon VanderWal, who worked on Guilford mentor Tom Palombo’s Defiance College staff from 2001-2003.

Sanborn’s eighth double-double of the season and 33rd of his career sent the Quakers to their fifth straight win. The 6-9 senior made nine-of-10 shots from the floor and also blocked a game-high four shots. He had 13 points and seven boards in the first half, which helped Guilford open a 40-31 halftime lead.

The margin grew to 14 points on a Gabriel Lowder basket with 14:31 left in regulation before Ohio Wesleyan (2-6) rallied on the hot hands of reserves Andy Winters and Dillon McBride. Winters scored all of his 14 points in the second half and McBride tallied nine second-half points, including a three-pointer with 1:06 remaining that made it a 72-70 game.

Guilford’s T.C. Anderson answered with a three-pointer at the other end and the Quakers sealed the win with four free throws in the final 19 seconds.

The Quakers’ Rhett Bonner added 18 points, three assists and two steals. Teammate Clay Henson finished with 16 points, thanks in part to three three-pointers.

Pat Pellerite led Ohio Wesleyan with 15 points. McBride, who scored 12 points, and Brent Pleiman shared team-high rebounding honors with six boards apiece. The Battling Bishops held a 38-36 rebounding edge, which marked the first time Guilford has been outrebounded this year.
