The over/under on former WSSU Ram Steven A. Smith, the new morning man on FOX Sports Radio

How long do you give Steven A. Smith on FOX Sports Radio as the morning man with the 6am-9am main morning-drive slot? The show can be heard here locally on 790AM the Ball and Smith has just recently replaced long-time favorite Steve Czaben.

What is the over/under on SAS? How long do you give Smith? He lasted a little bit less than seven and a-half months on ESPN with his afternoon show(Sept 20, 2007 until the end of April 2008)

Let’s say the over/under is 9 months on FOX. Do you take the over or the under?????

And did you know this about Mr. Smith:
He attended Winston-Salem State University, an historically black university in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. While in college, he played some basketball under Hall of Fame coach Clarence Gaines, however he later wrote an article for the university newspaper suggesting that Gaines retire due to health issues.
*****Info from wikipedia*****

Will Steven A. Smith, a former Winston-Salem State Ram, last more than 9 months as the FOX morning host????? 6-9am Eastern and 3-6am Pacific…..

Boy, FOX has gone through some radio show hosts over the years…..Van Earl Wright, Andrew Siciliano, Ben Maller, remember J Dub, James Washington???? Tony Bruno, and on and on we go…..

  1. i will take the “over”. Steven has built his reputation mostly on b-ball thus with the show launching during b-ball season that should give him some added listeners. However, my concern is that FOX does not do a good job with promoting such shows nationally or locally. 790am is a good example of a station that carries some FOX programming but does not promote itself thru out the area. in the Raleigh area I would see 850am getting promoted at all of the business luncheons and shows prior to their programming changes. most sporting shows such as Steven’s show often lose a lot of their listeners during the non-basketball and football season. if he is still on the air in September, then he will survive for several years with added promotional value.

  2. It was a lot like that with the old Jim Valvano radio show. Red-hot during basketball season and then they tried to keep it going during the off-season because of Jimmy V’s popularity and it didn’t work….

Chris Landry is a FOX Sports radio guy on the weekends and this guy knows football and could be headed to top level in the future. I have heard him for a while and he has a strange voice, but he knows his material as good as anybody in the business.

I heard Bob Valvano doing color for a Louisville Cardinals basketball game last night. He used to do a few things on ESPN radio later at night and not sure if he is still part of the mix on the mic at ESPN radio or not….

  3. Still prefer Czabe and Co. I think this is a mistake but I dont like Smith anyway. Never have. But, I m not an NBA fan either which is his forte. Gave home a couple listens the last couple mornings. Naah. I’ll just struggle with Flynn and maybe some Brad and Britt (tuned out for some time) and wait on DP and The Danettes

  4. I vote for less than 9 months and hope for less than days.

I listened the other day and he was awful. Went on and on about Elin Woods not “taking care of Tiger in the bedroom.” Yikes.

I wrote a note to Sporting News Radio about bringing Steve Czaban on board.

  5. The ESPN outlet from Winston-Salem, 980AM, went hispanic and now it’s 620 the Buzzz with Adam Gold and Joe Ovies there and there’s always Don Imus, he’s coming in now on 850 out of Raleigh.

99.9 the Fan out of Raleigh with Mike and Mike will probably come through for you on the east side down toward the Guilford/Alamance County line….

Brad and Britt are actually pretty good and they will blow Bill Flynn away and we know Bill can now fly, he’s at WPTI……The female co-host with Bill is not bad, but they will have to find some guests that are newsworthy/newmakers and 94.5FM mornings will have to go at it with some hard line topics and not go all softball on us.

You have to make a few people mad or in turn stir them up, to get the overall crowd’s attention…..

What if FOX Sports radio brought in Scott Ferrell on the Bench, Johnny Renshaw or the old Fabulous Sports Babe, Nancy Donellan, to do mornings?????Just some names to toss around….

Ferrell probably wouldn’t work out, he has a national contract with Sirius-XM, but you never know, as you guys were saying, Czaben was doing two shows. One in the morning and one in the afternoon and Bill Flynn is doing the same thing now with 94.5 mornings and 99.5 afternoons, but I do think the Magic of voice tracking is helping Bill with that afternoon shift…..

  6. Andy,

Those AM posers cannot hold Czaban’s jock strap.

Ferrell? He’s like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard.

At this point, it could be college radio, silence or chat with my daughter on the way to her school.

I want my Czabe TV (radio)!

  7. Stephen A Smith is horrid. I was sorry to see Czaban go. And it’s even worse now that 980 has gone hispanic. It seems hard to get any consistent sports radio in the triad. Dan Patrick at 9 am is not bad but I cannot take 3 hours of Jim Rome. Hopefully someone else will pick up ESPN radio soon. Almost makes me long for the days of Big Mo and Bill Kimm.

  8. Thanks for the good writeup. It in reality used to be a entertainment account it. Glance complex to far brought agreeable from you! By the way, how could we keep in touch?
