Greensboro College men show Shenandoah on Saturday, as GC gets victory 79-73

Winchester, Va. — RJ Smith (Charleston, SC/Porter Gaud School) scored a career high 24 points to lead Greensboro College to a 79-73 win at Shenandoah on Saturday. Smith was 11-13 from the field and had two 3-point baskets. The Pride improved to 9-8 and 2-2 in the USA South.

“That was RJ’s best game of his career,” said GC Head Coach Bryan Galuski, “This past week has been a true senior leader and crucial to our success.”

Adam Powell (Stuart, FL/Jensen Beach High) added 16 points for the visitors. He was 10-10 from the free throw line for The Pride.

As a team, GC was 18-20 (90-percent) from the charity stripe. SU, on the other hand, shot 39-percent (11-28) on free throws. At one point, the Hornets were 3-18.

Greensboro led 32-29 at halftime. GC went on a 12-2 run to begin the second half. A Smith layup put GC ahead 44-31 with 16:42 remaining.

An Andre Porter (Hope Mills, NC/Southview) jumper gave the visitors its biggest lead, 64-49, with 6:32 left. SU cut the deficit to 5 points in the last 2 minutes but got no closer.

Both team had 46 rebounds. Walter Brady (St. Petersburg, Fla./Gibbs) had 8 boards (and 9 points) to lead Pride rebounders.

Dudley Mitchell and Kevin Kline both had 16 points for the home team. Shenandoah dropped to 6-12, 3-2.

Lewis Owenby (Black Mountain, NC/Owen) had 6 blocked shots. The junior needs just 7 more blocks to become the GC all-time leader.

The Pride plays at CNU on Sunday at 4 p.m.
