  1. Congrats to to the staff and players at Guilford. A great accomplishment. Best of luck the rest of the season and into the National Tournament.

  2. Yes, congratulations but not a great accomplishment yet. Any coach or player would never consider being first at any point other than the end of the season would not consider this an accomplishment.

  3. This is a great accomplishment regardless of the time of the season “eddie willis”. This is a sign that you have the right coaches, program and players at your school to compete at the highest level of your sport. It will also draw positive attention to the school, city and basketball program which will bring in even better players and more money from attendance. I have lived in Greensboro for 15 years but I have never been to a Guilford College b-ball game. I only like paying to see competitive b-ball and obviously Guilford College desires my attention as a fan. Great job Quakers and I will see one of your games within the next week !

  4. What a great thing for Guilford. Number one in the nation is HUGE. Think how many D3 schools there are that are playing basketball. Think how hard it is and how good you have to be to be ranked number one in the NATION. Number one in the NATION! The top ranked D3 school in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Now think how STUPID is was to even suggest that a local high school team could compete with them. STUPID. IGNORANT. DUMB. SHOWS A SUPERFICIAL UNDERSTANDING OF ATHELTICS. Insulting to Guilford College, the number one ranked D3 school in America. Whoever suggested it should be ashamed and owes Tom Palumbo and his team an appology. Whoever agreed with it should crawl back into their hole of ignorance and hide.

  5. Absolutely. It is ludicrous to think that any local high school team could compete with the likes of Guilford College. GC would beat the best high school team in North Carolina, Christ School, by double figures. I seem to remember the Quakers beating Elon University, a division I school, in an exhibition game a few years ago with a much less talented roster, when Elon made a run to the SoCon final before losing to Davidson the same season.

If anyone thinks that a high school team can compete with a college program you really don’t understand the game and the development that takes place from 18 to 22-23 years old both mentally and physically.

That said, all the GDS folks can count your lucky stars that you played Oak Ridge earlier in the season. Right now, Oak Ridge is the best HIGH SCHOOL team in the area AND has the most individual talent. On the other hand, the Oak Ridge supporters need to stop complaining about the referees as they lost the game fair and square. Did you know that while Oak Ridge had 4 more fouls called for the game, they actually shot more free throws? I wish I could somehow post the score sheet or video of the game on this website.

I also think that GDS would beat Northern and Dudley in a seven game series, and therefore I would give the Bengals the edge over both these teams but only slightly. Finally, the GDS coaching staff is the best in the area, and honestly its not even close. Sure some other coaches know their “stuff” and would obviously find success (and a lot less headaches) at GDS but Coach Johnson and company are the most experienced and successful staff in the area and perhaps the state.

So what have we learned? OVER-UNDERS

Guilford College +25 > better than in high school team in the area
GDS Coaching Staff +15 > any coaching staff in the area
Oak Ridge +10 > any high school team in the area

  6. We all need to show up at the Guilford-Hampden Sydney game on Wednesday to show our support for these young men and their fine accomplishments. I would still like to see the Oak Ridge and Guilford game.

Great work by the Quakers for reaching #1.
