Guilford men win again with victory over Lynchburg College/Clay Henson goes for season-high 30 points

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Clay Henson scored a game- and season-high 30 points in Guilford College’s 91-74 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s basketball win over visiting Lynchburg College Saturday. Teammate Tyler Sanborn notched his 19th double-double of the season with 23 points and a game-high 16 rebounds for Guilford, which is ranked first in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll.

After scoring 12 combined points in his previous two games, Henson broke out of a shooting slump with an eight-for-12 effort from three-point range. The senior guard matched his season high for threes in a game and narrowly missed his school record of nine set in 2008. He also became the 14th member of Guilford’s 1,500 career points club and moved into 13th place on the Quakers’ all-time scoring list with 1,525 points.

Henson had 17 first-half points, including nine during an 11-1 Quakers’ run that opened a 35-22 edge midway through the period. Sanborn added 16 points and 14 boards in the first half, which also helped Guilford to a 51-37 halftime lead.

Lynchburg played Guilford fairly evenly in the second half, but could not cut their deficit to less than eight points. Senior K.C. Mendez scored eight of his team-high 11 points in the second half, during which time Lynchburg made 46.5 percent of its field goals. Rookie Austin Chillemi scored seven of his 10 points in the second half. Jeff Langrock , one of three Hornets with nine points, grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

The Quakers got 16 points from Rhett Bonner, who made four-of-six three-pointers. Rookie Josh Pittman matched his career high with 14 points off the bench that included two three-pointers. Guilford made 14 threes and shot 60.9 percent from beyond the arc, both season highs. The Quakers also enjoyed a 41-26 rebounding advantage.

Guilford returns to action Monday (2/15) at league-rival Washington and Lee University in a contest rescheduled from Feb. 6.
