Grimsley 9 16 15 31 – 71
Ragsdale 10 14 25 27 – 76

In an exciting first round battle between the fourth seed from the Metro Conference, Grimsley, and the first seed from the Piedmont Triad, Ragsdale, the two teams went back and forth until Ragsdale took control in the third and pulled away for the 5 point win.

Ragsdale’s Tyquan Roberts got off to a fast start, scoring the Tigers first 7 points of the game to lead them to a 10 – 9 first quarter advantage. Carter Gourley had two three’s in the period for Grimsley. The second quarter saw 8 lead changes as the two teams went up and down the court. Grimsley got the last basket before the half from Krechaun Williams to take a 25 – 24 lead.

The third quarter belonged to the Tigers and to Roberts. Wheeling and dealing in the paint, Roberts displayed some outstanding moves around the basket and finished with authority as he 5 times in the paint and then put an exclamation point on the quarter with a three pointer at the buzzer to give Ragsdale a 49 – 40 lead.

Ragsdale extended the lead to as many as thirteen points in the fourth before Grimsley rallied and got as close as 4 with 4:19 to go. Rashad Sweeney led the comeback scoring 8 points in the first four minutes of the final quarter. Kalik Parker then got hot for Ragsdale and over the final four minutes scored 11 points including a huge 3 with three minutes left to get the lead back to 11 at 66 – 55. Grimsley got as close as 5 with 11.3 seconds left but could get no closer as Ragsdale wrapped up the 76 – 71 win

Tyquan Roberts had a season high 29 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to lead the way for the Tigers. Kalik Parker added 19 for the winners. Rashad Sweeney had 20 for the Whirlies, while Krechaun Williams added 14 and Carter Gourley had 13.

With the win, Ragsdale avenges a early season 21 point defeat at the hands of Grimsley and moves on to the second round while sending the Whirlies packing. Three of the Piedmont Triad conference representatives (Ragsdale, Northwest Guilford and High Point Central) defeated representatives of the Metro Conference (Grimsley,
Smith and Western Guilford) in the first round.

  1. Awesome game by Tyquan. He’s been due for a huge game like that. Hope he keeps it up for the rest of the playoffs. Sounds like Leek had a great game too. Both those players are scoring Ragsdale is dangerous.

Congrats to Shoemaker as well for pulling this team together. Completely rebuilt this year and has them playing really well since the first of the year.

  2. You are right on it….Tyquan played a great game last nigth. Coach Shoemaker and his staff work hard, this team has really improved over the course of the season. It not always about how you start, but how you finish. Great job boys! and Coaches, keep doing what you do! we are proud of our Tigers.
