GUILFORD DOWNS WOOSTER 75-68 TO SET UP NCAA SECTIONAL FINAL MATCHUP WITH ODAC RIVAL

Greensboro, N.C. (3/12/10) — No. 3-ranked Guilford College held off No. 17 Wooster College (Ohio) 75-68 in the third round (sectional) of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship March 12, setting up a sectional-final matchup with Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Eastern Mennonite University (Va.).

Guilford (29-2) is in the sectional final for the third time in four years and will meet a No. 10 EMU team (25-4) that handed the Quakers their last defeat, 90-63, in Greensboro Feb. 10. Guilford is 24-2 at home in the last two years. The Royals advanced to the sectional final by upsetting No. 4 Whitworth 74-71.

The sectional final is scheduled for 7 p.m. March 13, with a trip to the NCAA semifinals in Salem, Va., next weekend on the line.

Against Wooster, Guilford led 42-22 when Clay Henson hit a jumper from the left side with 17:55 remaining in the game. But the Scots went on a 19-4 run, capped by Bryan Wickliffe’s jumper with 12:58 left to pull within 46-41.

A 10-4 run by the Quakers, including eight points from Henson, pushed the lead back to 12 at 58-46 with 3:40 left.

Wooster’s Ian Franks scored 20 of his team’s last 26 points, including the final 12. His jumper with :11.6 on the clock pulled the Scots to within 73-68—the second time in the half they were as close as five points. Guilford hit 15 of 20 tries from the free throw line in the last 2:03, including 8 of 10 by Rhett Bonner.

Tyler Sanborn (left) led the Quakers with 21 points and a career-high 23 rebounds. Bonner added 16 points, Henson 15 and T.C. Anderson 10.

Franks led all scorers with 27 and collected nine rebounds for Wooster, which finished 25-6. Nathan Balch added 15 points for the Scots.
