Greensboro College battles back at DIII Softball: GC 7, EMU 3

Newport News, Va. – Greensboro College came from behind to defeat Eastern Mennonite, 7-3, in an NCAA Division III softball elimination game on Friday. Cyndel Henson (Landrum, SC/Blue Ridge High School) had a single that scored 2 runners in the sixth that highlighted a five run inning for The Pride.

GC (28-14-1) faces Susquehanna on Saturday at Noon in elimination game.

The Pride’s Hannah Pennell (Statesville, NC/West Iredell) (17-5) got the win. She allowed no runs and scattered four hits in her 4 1/3 innings. Pitched. Fellow freshman Brittany David (Concord, NC/Northwest) tossed the first 2 2/3 innings and allowed three runs in the third inning.

“It was great to see us come out and play well today,” said GC Head Coach Whitney Gelin. “We battled and hung in there. I’m proud of my team and we look forward to Saturday.”

Trailing 3-0, GC tallied one time in the bottom of the its third frame. Brittany Evans (Creedmoor, NC/South Granville) reached on a hit by pitch and came home on a sacrifice fly by Brittany Teer (Thomasville, NC/Ledford). Evans also walked and reached on a fielder’s choice and scored three times in the contest.

GC added another run in the fifth after Evans scored on a Rebecca Pink (Apex, NC/Apex) fielder’s choice.

In the next inning, The Pride plated five runs. Kelsey Burkett (Clemmons, NC/West Forsyth) hit a one out double to ignite the GC rally. The last two runs were unearned.

EMU out-hit GC 7-4. Nicole Shelton went 2-3 to lead Royal batters. Eastern Mennonite ends it year at 19-18.
