This year’s winners of the Bill White Scholarship have been announced, and 10 former Colt League baseball players have been selected. They will receive their scholarship checks on July 28 at a ceremony at the East Zone Colt League Tournament at Stoner-White Field.

The recipients include four players from Ragsdale, two each from Southwest Guilford and Dudley, and one from both Page and Southern Guilford.

The four from Ragsdale are outfielder Chris Armwood, catcher Walt Sparks, pitcher/infielder Billy Stone and infielder Michael Whited.

The two from Southwest are pitcher/infielder Brock Hudgens and catcher Elliott Slack.

Rounding out the honorees are Dudley’s Alex Moore and Tevin Neal, Southern Guilford’s Daniel Doss and Page’s Trevor Brackett.

Whited is the only Ragsdale grad of the group who will play baseball in college. He is headed to Catawba. Sparks accepted a full scholarship to Richmond to be the long snapper for the Spiders football team. Stone is slated to be a linebacker for Campbell University. Armwood is headed to UNC-Charlotte but does not intend to play on the collegiate level.

Southwest ace Hudgens is headed to UNC-Charlotte on a baseball scholarship. Batterymate Slack is also going to UNC-Charlotte but will not play baseball. His brother Warren, incidentally, is a former Bill White winner now pitching at UNC Greensboro.

Dudley’s Moore was an all-state quarterback who is being courted by N.C. A&T and N.C. Central but has not made a decision. Infielder Neal graduated 14th in his class at Dudley and will attend UNC-Chapel Hill on an academic scholarship.

Page ace Brackett will attend Maryville (Tenn.) College where he is expected to join the pitching staff.

Doss was captain of the Southern Guilford baseball team, and locals will be able to see him further develop his talents for GTCC next season.

Since its inception in 1981, over 150 athletes have received Bill White Scholarships, worth either $500 or $1,000 apiece.

“We’ve given away over $100,000 in college scholarships,” said Colt League director Ned McMillan. “The three criteria are financial need, academic excellence and community service, in addition to being a former Colt player. All 10 of these young men clearly meet our high standards.”

Bill White was a pioneer of youth sports in Greensboro and Guilford County. He will be inducted posthumously into the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame Sept. 20 in ceremonies at the Greensboro Coliseum.

  1. Doss to GTCC to play baseball? Haven’t heard anything about him from the Titan coaching staff. Just curious.

  2. 35 years ago when I started working with youngsters in this area Bill White was a good friend and mentor. To this day I can recall dozens of stories, escapades and fun times we had. He was second to none and the young men he worked with loved him. Bill laid the groundwork for nearly all local youth sports in this town.

Many of the newbees to the Greensboro sports scene have no idea the debt they owe to Bill and the other legends that he worked with. Greensboro enjoys wonderful sports opportunities for young people and for coaches because of the work done by individuals like Bill, Bill Britt, Robert Black, Sam Alvis, Wayne Butler and on and on.

  3. GTCC does have a baseball team.Fromwhat I have heard the coach has done alot of local recruiting.. I know of 1 kid from Southern Alamance and Two from Southeast and I think one from Providence Grove. They play D1 jr. college base ball.Which also has a fall leauge. I think some of these kids had offers from D3 schools but juco baseball has so much more to offer. The coach is John Barrow he played for Radsdale. It will be interesting to see who replaces his assist. coach since AA is going to Oakridge. But the coach has done his homework and has been on the road looking for local talent. This might be a interesting subject for Andy.

  4. Maybe Coach Barrow will drop us a line with some more info on his GTCC baseball team…

He has sent us info in the past.
