SAN FRANCISCO — At some point, surgery will be required.
Chris Coghlan right now is in the process of trying determine when. Either Thursday or Friday the Florida Marlins left fielder will return to South Florida to have his left knee examined by team doctors.
Coghlan tore the meniscus in his left knee during a postgame celebration Sunday, and he was placed on the disabled list Monday.
“After checking with the doctors and getting a couple of opinions, then I have to sit down and figure out what’s the best way to go,” Coghlan said.
“One thing for sure is eventually, there is going to be surgery.”
If surgery is required, Coghlan will miss a minimum of six to eight weeks. There is a chance his season would be over.
If the medical advice is that he can put surgery off for a few weeks and not cause any more damage, then he may try to play through and get surgery after the season.
“It does feel better. I’ve been icing each day, non-stop,” the Marlins’ leadoff batter said. “There is just fluid in there. We’re trying to calm that down. That’s when we will determine what is best.”
The 2009 National League Rookie of the Year has dealt with a torn meniscus before. When he was 14, he tore the cartilage in his right knee while making a cutting motion in the outfield of a youth game.
The nature in which Coghlan was injured, celebrating after a win, has created national attention.
“Some people will get a laugh at it,” he said. “Some people will think it’s crazy. But it’s just a freak thing. You can’t control your emotions in the fact of the excitement of when you win the game.
“It was a walk-off. It was our fourth one. It’s exciting times. It’s not like when you hit a walk-off, everyone is going to say, ‘Good job,’ you give a high-five and walk away. This game is played with emotion.”
Highly touted Morrison debuts for Marlins
SAN FRANCISCO — One of the most polished hitting prospects the Marlins have had in a long time, Logan Morrison made his Major League debut Tuesday night at San Francisco.
The Marlins selected the contract of Morrison from Triple-A New Orleans after they placed Chris Coghlan on the 15-day disabled list with a torn meniscus in his left knee. In other roster moves Tuesday, Nate Robertson was released and right-handed prospect Kris Harvey was designated for assignment.
“I noticed Coghlan didn’t play,” Morrison said. “I didn’t think anything of it. … I’m really sorry to hear that about him because he’s such a great player. Anything I can do to be half the player he is, I’d be all right.”
The left-handed Morrison batted second in the lineup.
“I feel comfortable with Logan Morrison hitting second because he has very good knowledge of the strike zone,” said manager Edwin Rodriguez, who prefers to have a lefty hitting second.
Promoting Morrison means the Marlins have their top two prospects in the big leagues at the same time since 2008 when Cameron Maybin and Chris Volstad were on the squad.
