Greensboro College featured in USA South Soccer/Volleyball polls

Greensboro College’s men’s soccer team was selected tied for fifth in the preseason poll of USA South coaches.

Under second-year Head Coach Giovanni Vlahos, The Pride returns six starters and 12 letterwinners from last year’s team. GC opens the year vs. Leabanon Valley College at the Goucher (Md.) Tournament on Sept. 3.

Christopher Newport University under the direction of 15-year Head Coach Steve Shaw, was picked in the preseason coaches’ poll to win the USA South Athletic Conference men’s soccer title in 2010. Last fall, the Captains captured the program’s second consecutive USA South Regular Season Championship and their first-ever Conference Tournament crown. Additionally, CNU reached the NCAA national quarterfinals for the second consecutive season. CNU received six of seven first place votes (36 points) as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.

The winners of five USA South Regular Season Championships, N.C. Wesleyan College, finished a second in the balloting with 31 points and the final first place vote. Averett University placed third in the poll with 26 points while Methodist University followed in fourth with 21 points. Greensboro College and Shenandoah University shared fifth place with 13 points each while Ferrum College rounded out the poll with seven points.

The USA South Athletic Conference Tournament will once again head to Martinsville, Virginia as the Southern Virginia Recreation Facilities Authority will host the 2010 Men’s and Women’s Soccer semifinals and finals. The contests will be held at the Smith River Sports Complex in Martinsville, Virginia on November 5 and 6. This will be the second of a two-year commitment in Martinsville. The first round games of the tournaments will continue to be held on the campuses of the higher seeded team.

Greensboro College was picked to finish sixth in the upcoming USA South volleyball season, according to a poll of conference coaches.

Under 29th-year Head Coach Jean Lojko, The Pride volleyball regular season gets underway on Thursday, September 2 as Salem visits Hanes Gym for a 7 p.m. Lojko is five wins away from her 600th college victory. She will coach her 1000th game on Sept. 5 vs. Roanoke at the Averett Tournament.

Christopher Newport University was picked in the preseason coaches’ poll to win the USA South Athletic Conference volleyball title in 2010. The Captains have captured at least a share of six consecutive regular season crowns. CNU has also won seven of the past nine USA South Tournament championships, including the last three titles.

Christopher Newport received nine of the ten first place votes (81 points) as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.
