Guilford C athletic staff grows by three

*GUILFORD ADDS THREE ASSISTANTS TO ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT STAFF*

*GREENSBORO, N.C. –* Guilford College rounded out its athletic department
staff for the 2010-11 year Thursday with the addition of three assistant
coaches. *Nate Bates* joins the Quakers as assistant men’s lacrosse
coach, *Daniel Hadra* takes over as assistant baseball coach and *Kayla Felty* is
Guilford’s new assistant women’s basketball coach.

Bates assists head coach Tom Carmean, who took over Guilford’s men’s
lacrosse team in June. Bates was a four-year starter at Taylor University,
where he also played football. An attackman, he garnered All-America honors
from the United States Lacrosse Men’s Division of Intercollegiate Associates
(Division B) in 2004. Bates started his coaching career at Taylor as an
undergraduate and served as the Indiana school’s head lacrosse coach from
2000-04. After earning his bachelor’s degree in sport management in 2005,
Bates spent two years as an assistant athletic director at Heritage
Christian School in Indianapolis, where he worked as head boys’ lacrosse
coach for two seasons and earned the 2007 Indiana High School Lacrosse
Association Coach of the Year Award.

A Cincinnatus, N.Y., native, Bates returned east and joined the Messiah
College men’s lacrosse staff in 2007. He spent one season on the Falcons’
sidelines and helped the team to the 2008 Middle Atlantic Conference title
game. Bates worked at his high school alma mater, Skaneateles (N.Y.) High
School, from 2008-10 assisting both the football and boys’ lacrosse teams.
He also served as Messiah’s recruiting coordinator in 2009 and 2010.

Felty makes her college coaching debut as head coach Stephanie Flamini’s top
assistant. Like Flamini, the Schuylkill Haven, Pa., resident earned a
master’s degree from West Chester University and studied under the tutelage
of head women’s basketball coach Deidre Kane. Playing as a graduate student,
Felty was a reserve guard for the 2009 Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference East champions. She earned her bachelor’s degree in comprehensive
science in 2008 from Villanova University where she was a three-year
starting outfielder on the Wildcats’ softball team.

Felty was a four-sport standout at Nativity B.V.M High School and played in
three 1A state basketball finals. She broke into the coaching ranks with
assistant positions at Pine Grove (Pa.) High School and Blue Mountain (Pa.)
High School. Felty also worked two years at the West Chester Women’s
Basketball Camps.

Guilford head baseball coach Nick Black ’02 tabbed Hadra to work with the
Quakers’ pitching staff. A 2008 graduate of league-rival Hampden-Sydney
College, Hadra pitched in 57 career games and compiled a 14-13 record with
four saves and a 4.03 earned run average. As a senior, he ranked 22nd among
NCAA Division III strikeout leaders (82) and earned honorable mention
All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference laurels for the second straight season.
Hadra also played on the Tigers’ 2005 team that reached the National
Championship Series.

After earning a psychology degree, Hadra started coaching as an assistant at
St. Andrew’s Presbyterian College. The Knights had three All-Carolinas
Conference baseball selections in his tenure, including the league’s 2010
Freshman of the Year. The Mechanicsville, Va., native also served as St.
Andrews’ athletic facilities director.
