Tough day for Guilford College in Virginia: Central Davidson-grad Brown, burns Quakers in Danville

DANVILLE, Va. – Jerel Robinson had a 79-yard punt return for a touchdown
and Averett University forced four turnovers in a 45-9 football victory over
visiting Guilford College Saturday.

After Guilford’s DeShawn Lindsay scored on a 92-yard fumble return, Averett
(1-1) reeled off 45 unanswered points for its sixth win in seven games with
Guilford (0-3). In addition to Robinson’s punt return for a score, the
Cougars blocked a punt and scored off of three Quakers’ miscues.

Averett freshman quarterback Kirkland Brown (Lexington, N.C./Central
Davidson) passed for 220 and two touchdowns. His 33-yard scoring strike to
Owen Hayden in the second quarter was set up by a Robslin Emmanuel
interception. Brown found Daniel Reed from 57 yards away for a
fourth-quarter score after Darrick Johnson recovered one of two Quakers’
fumbles on the afternoon.

Averett outgained Guilford on the ground, 179-50, thanks in part to the
powerful running of 6-0, 245-pound back James Wilson, who picked up a
game-high 79 yards and a score on 13 carries. Backup Clayton Navarre added
56 rushing yards on eight carries, including a 21-yard scoring scamper in
the third quarter.

In addition to forcing turnovers, Averett’s defense had two sacks and
prevented the Quakers’ offense from getting on track. Guilford managed 264
total offensive yards on 72 plays, an average of 3.7 yards per play. By
contrast, Averett averaged 7.7 yards per play.

Following a bye week, Guilford opens Old Dominion Athletic Conference play
Oct. 2 against visiting Washington and Lee University.
