Greensboro College women’s soccer gets first-ever win over Washington & Lee

Lexington, Va. — Mary Randolph (Bowie, MD/Bowie) and Meredith Kelly (Snow Camp, NC/Southern Alamance) scored second half goals as Greensboro College upset Washington & Lee, 2-0, on Sunday. The win was the first for The Pride over the Generals in 14 tries.

“I’m very proud of the way we battled today,” said Pride Head Coach Ian Spooner. “We were smart in how we played, and it paid off.”

The score was 0-0 at the break. Randolph scored off the cross bar in the 46th minute. On a counter-attack in the 78th minute, Kelly made some nifty moves and finished nicely on a low shot.

GC made the most of its opportunities. W&L led in shots (16-4) and corner kicks (6-1). Katie Allegro (Statesville, NC/West Iredell ) made 9 saves and recorded her fourth shut-out of the year.

The Pride improved to 4-2 and the Generals are now 2-2.

The lone tie in the GC-W&L series was in 2003 in the NCAA playoffs. The Generals advanced in that game on penalty kicks.

The Pride next hosts Mary Baldwin on Saturday. The USA South opener begins at 1 p.m.
