DERICK KOSGEI NAMED GUILFORD COLLEGE STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior cross country performer Derick Kosgei (Eldoret,
Kenya/Kipkabus Secondary) collected the Guilford College Student-Athlete of
the Week Award Monday. The award is presented weekly by the Guilford’s
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Kosgei set Guilford’s cross country record for a 6.4-meter course Sept. 10
by running the Mountaineer Open in 20 minutes, 48.34 seconds. He
placed 21st among 86 runners, all of whom competed for NCAA Division I
or Division II schools. The Division III Quakers finished fifth among six teams with 133 points. The record marked Kosgei’s second in two events as he won the
season-opening Guilford College X-C Carnival Sept. 4 in 15:51, a school record for five kilometers.

Coach Heidi Pinkerton’s teams are back in action Oct. 1 when they run in the
Great American X-C Carnival in Cary, N.C.

The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford’s SAAC, which
is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 20 varsity teams.
The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and
seeks to build community among Guilford’s student-athletes and
non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a cancer
awareness promotions, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the
North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
