GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College junior Mat Hennick (Kenmore,
Wash./Inglemoor (Skagit Valley College) earned the Old Dominion Athletic
Conference (ODAC) Golfer of the Week Award Monday. He also was named the
Guilford College Student-Athlete of the Week by the school’s Student-Athlete
Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Hennick made his Guilford debut with a sixth-place finish in the Sea Trail
Intercollegiate Sept. 24-26 in Sunset Beach, N.C. The Quakers were the lone
non-NCAA Division I team in the 12-school field and Hennick’s 69-71-73-213
helped Guilford to fifth place. He shot three-under-par for the tournament
and edged teammate Noah Ratner (Asheville, N.C./Asheville) by a stroke for
Guilford’s low score in the 69-man field.
First-year coach Corey Maggard’s Quakers are ranked third in the Golf
World/Nike Golf NCAA Division III Coaches’ Poll. Guilford returns to action
Oct. 2-3 at the Ted Keller Memorial in Glen Allen, Va.
The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford’s SAAC, which
is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 20 varsity teams.
The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and
seeks to build community among Guilford’s student-athletes and
non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a cancer
awareness promotions, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the
North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
