GREENSBORO, N.C. â€“ Guilford College junior Mat Hennick (Kenmore,
Wash./Inglemoor (Skagit Valley College) earned the Old Dominion Athletic
Conference (ODAC) Golfer of the Week Award Monday. He also was named the
Guilford College Student-Athlete of the Week by the schoolâ€™s Student-Athlete
Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Hennick made his Guilford debut with a sixth-place finish in the Sea Trail
Intercollegiate Sept. 24-26 in Sunset Beach, N.C. The Quakers were the lone
non-NCAA Division I team in the 12-school field and Hennickâ€™s 69-71-73-213
helped Guilford to fifth place. He shot three-under-par for the tournament
and edged teammate Noah Ratner (Asheville, N.C./Asheville) by a stroke for
Guilfordâ€™s low score in the 69-man field.
First-year coach Corey Maggardâ€™s Quakers are ranked third in the Golf
World/Nike Golf NCAA Division III Coachesâ€™ Poll. Guilford returns to action
Oct. 2-3 at the Ted Keller Memorial in Glen Allen, Va.
The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilfordâ€™s SAAC, which
is comprised of representatives from each of the schoolâ€™s 20 varsity teams.
The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and
seeks to build community among Guilford’s student-athletes and
non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a cancer
awareness promotions, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the
North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
