GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jordan Alexander’s goal in the 72nd minute broke a 1-1 tie and sent Guilford College to a 3-1 men’s soccer victory over visiting
Washington and Lee Saturday night.
Freddy Gomez (Burlington, N.C./Williams) added insurance tally 11 minutes
later to send the Quakers (6-3-2, 2-1-1 ODAC) to their sixth win in nine
matches (6-1-2).
The Generals (2-4-2, 1-3 ODAC) opened the scoring on James Pymm’s unassisted
goal in the 27th minute. Gomez set up Amir Moore’s equalizer 6:44 before
halftime with a nice through ball down the left sideline.
Alexander tallied his team-leading sixth goal of the season at the 71:39
mark of the second half. He took a long pass from Hugh Griffis near
midfield, beat Generals’ keeper Alex Lambert to the ball and looped it over
the goalie’s head from about 16 yards out.
Guilford outshot the Generals, 9-7, in the chippy affair, which featured
five yellow cards and 35 fouls between the two teams. Guilford’s Michael
MacVane made two saves for his first college win in goal. Lambert also made
two stops.
The Quakers host Averett University Wednesday (10/6) at 4:00 p.m.
