GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior cross country performer Derick Kosgei (Eldoret,
Kenya/Kipkabus Secondary) collected the Old Dominion Athletic Conference
(ODAC) Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week and the Guilford College
Student-Athlete of the Week Awards Monday. The Guilford award, which Kosgei
won for the second time in three weeks, is presented weekly by Guilford’s
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Kosgei set Guilford’s cross country record for an eight-kilometer course
Oct. 1 by running the Great American XC Festival in 25 minutes, 7.1 seconds.
He placed third among 96 runners, many of whom competed for NCAA Division I
or Division II schools. The Division III Quakers finished third among 12
teams with 87 points, tops among teams from its division. The record marked
Kosgei’s third in three events as he set the school mark for a 6.4 kilometer
race with a time of 20:48.34 at the Mountaineer Open Sept. 17, and won the
season-opening Guilford College X-C Carnival Sept. 4 in 15:51, a school
standard for five kilometers.
Coach Heidi Pinkerton’s teams are back in action Oct. 16 when they run in
the North Carolina Collegiate Championships on their own Meadows Course on
campus.
The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford’s SAAC, which
is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 20 varsity teams.
The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and
seeks to build community among Guilford’s student-athletes and
non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a cancer
awareness promotions, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the
North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
