Guilford College Quakers earn cross country ranking

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s men’s cross country team earned its first regional ranking in school history Tuesday. The Quakers stand seventh in the Oct. 4 United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South/Southeast Region Rankings, first among the poll’s two Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) teams.

Guilford placed third among 12 schools at the Great American XC Festival
University Race of Champions Oct. 1. One of three NCAA Division III teams in
the field, the Quakers finished behind 10th-ranked Duke University and NCAA
Division II University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Guilford also placed
fifth among six teams at the Mountaineer Open Sept. 17 as the lone Division
III club in the field. The Quakers won the seven-team Guilford College XC
Carnival Sept. 4, which also included wins over upper-division competition.

The Quakers have been led by junior Derick Kosgei (Eldoret, Kenya/Kipkabus
Secondary), who has set three school standards in as many races this fall.
He set the five-kilometer record (15:51) by winning the Guilford College XC
Carnival Sept. 4. Two weeks later he set the 6.4-kilometer mark with a
21st-place time of 20:48.3 at the Mountaineer Open. His third-place effort of 25:07.1 on the Great American XC Festival’s eight-kilometer course shattered the
previous school standard by over two minutes and earned him ODAC Men’s Cross
Country of the Week and Guilford Student-Athlete of the Week honors.

Coach Heidi Pinkerton’s cross country teams are back in action Oct. 16 at
the North Carolina Collegiate Championships, which will be run on Guilford’s
Meadows Course.
