INDIANAPOLIS (WGHP) – Ex-NASCAR driver and Pleasant Garden native Shane Hmiel remains in critical but stable condition after crashing during qualifying at the U.S. Auto Racing Club’s Silver Crown race at Terre Haute Action Track.

Hmiel, 30, was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital Saturday night after his vehicle slammed into a wall between Turns 3 and 4 and then rolled over, multiple media outlets reported.

Steve Hmeil, a former NASCAR crew chief and Shane’s father, said his son has “a long road to recovery.” Steve Hmeil is now director of competition for NASCAR’s Earnhardt Ganassi Racing.
