Toby Akinsola becomes the “Ayatolah(leader) of basketball Rock and Rolla”, as Quaker is named Student-Athlete of the Week….

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Tobi Akinsola (Cary, N.C./Word of
God Christian Academy) earned Guilford’s Student-Athlete of the Week Award
Monday, presented by the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Akinsola averaged 17.0 points on 66.7 percent field-goal shooting in
Guilford’s 2-0 week. The 6-2, 190-pound senior center scored a game- and
career-high 26 points in Guilford’s 64-61 victory over previously unbeaten
Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday. Akinsola made eight-of-11 shots and
10-of-12 free throws and had five rebounds against the second-ranked
Marlins. He scored 18 points in the second half alone, including a free
throw with 26 seconds left to put the Quakers up, 62-61. He scored eight
points and had two rebounds in 20 minutes of the Quakers’ 81-41 victory at
Emory and Henry College Jan. 19.

Akinsola is second on the team in scoring (12.2 ppg.), and leads the Quakers
in rebounding (7.3 rpg.) and field-goal percentage (52.6%). He is 13th in
the ODAC in scoring, fifth in rebounding, and 11th in field-goal percentage.
Akinsola has two 20-point games this season and two double-doubles,
including a 24-point, 14-rebound effort against Greensboro in Guilford’s
season opener.

Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers (12-6, 6-3 ODAC) travel to Randolph College on
Wednesday to take on the Wildcats (12-4, 6-2 ODAC). Guilford returns home
Saturday (1/29) for a 3:00 p.m. ODAC matchup with 10th-ranked Randolph-Macon
College.

The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford’s SAAC, which
is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 20 varsity teams.
The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and
seeks to build community among Guilford’s student-athletes and
non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a cancer
awareness promotions, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the
North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
