Quakers got hung up in Lynchburg as Randolph College tops Guilford 55-50

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Malcolm Nelson scored nine of his 11 points in the second
half to rally host Randolph College past Guilford College, 55-50, in an Old
Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball game Thursday.

The Wildcats (13-4, 7-2 ODAC) erased a 13-point second-half deficit to post
their first victory over the Quakers (12-7, 6-4 ODAC) in five tries.
Randolph’s Colton Hunt scored a team-high 14 points, including two of the
Wildcats’ game-icing six free throws in the final 23 seconds.

Guilford shot 56.5 percent from the floor in the first half to open a 29-20
lead and built the margin to 13 on a Josh Pittman basket with 17:13 left in
the game. Nelson answered with four points during a 7-0 Randolph run that
made it a three-point game. The Quakers’ margin returned to seven, but
Nelson made a couple free throws and his three-pointer at the 3:48 mark
trimmed Guilford’s lead to 48-45.

With the Quakers’ struggling to six -of-17 shooting (35.3%) in the second
half , Randolph kept chipping away and took the lead for good on Derrick
Woods-Morrow’s basket with 1:02 left. The teams traded free throws the rest
of the way as Guilford failed to score a field goal in the final 4:24.

Guilford’s Pittman led all scorers with 16 points and paced the Quakers with
six rebounds. Gabriel Lowder added eight points. Tobi Akinsola, who netted a
career-high 26 points in Guilford’s upset of second-ranked Virginia Wesleyan
College Saturday, scored six points on three-of-four shooting from the
floor. The Wildcats forced the Quakers into 21 turnovers, which led to 13
Wildcats points.

Guilford returns home to host ninth-ranked Randolph-Macon College Saturday
(1/29) at 3:00 p.m. in the Ragan-Brown Field House.
