Guilford punishes Piedmont with 14 hits as Kyle Wooden goes (4-5) in 12-3 win…..

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Zach Daw threw six solid innings and Kyle Wooden went 4-5 with two runs batted in in Guilford College’s 12-3 baseball win over
Piedmont College Monday.

The Quakers (1-1) took advantage of 10 walks issued by Lions’ (1-1) pitchers
and scored six unearned runs. Piedmont used seven Guilford errors and 11
walks from Quakers’ pitchers in a 19-0 rout Sunday in both teams’ season
opener.

After the Lions scored once in the top of the first without a hit, Guilford
hung seven runs in the first inning on Piedmont starter Caleb Cochran (0-1).
The junior lefthander’s defense didn’t do him any favors, as the Lions
committed two errors in the frame that led to six unearned runs. Wooden’s
two-run double and Travis Starbuck’s two-out, three-run homer to left were
the key offensive blasts in the inning.

Daw (1-0) stranded runners on third in three of his first four innings, but
gave up just two hits and fanned three. Piedmont’s Kevin McConnell had the
Lions’ first hit of the game in the fifth inning, an RBI single up the
middle that scored an unearned run.

Casey Mann went 2-5 with two RBI and a stolen base for Guilford, which had
14 hits. Teammate Jordan Slate homered among his two hits and scored three
times. Jay Cox also had two hits for the Quakers.

McConnell knocked in both Piedmont runs and had one of his team’s four hits.
