Greensboro College baseball gets first win of the season

Greensboro, N.C. — Michael Cobb (Union, NC/Union County High School) had a big day at the plate and was the winning pitcher as Greensboro College defeated Stevenson, 11-7, on Saturday at War Memorial Stadium. Cobb started in left field and went 3-5 with three runs and two RBI. He also pitched the last 3 1/3 innings and secured The Pride’s first victory of the year.

Cobb replaced starter John Atkins (Raleigh, NC/Middle Creek High School) in the 6th inning. With GC trailing 7-6, he got the final out of the inning and allowed just one hit and no runs the rest of the game. Atkins allowed seven runs but just three were earned. The Pride committed six errors in the contest.

Austin Catherina (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley CHS) went 3-4 with a double, one run and four RBI for Greensboro. Fellow freshman Jack Bishop (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola) doubled and drove in two runners for GC. Matt Irwin (Asburn, VA/Stone Bridge) had two hits, including a triple.

Thomas Goulian went 4-5 to lead Stevenson batters.

GC improved to 1-7 and SU to 0-4.

The Pride hosts Kenyon for a doubleheader on Sunday. The games begin at 11 a.m. at War Memorial Stadium.
