River Mill defeated Mount Airy 74-62, to win a Class 1-A State Sectional
Championship. The fast-paced, exciting contest featured several impressive runs by
both teams.
River Mill opened the game by scoring the first seven points, only to watch Mt. Airy
score the next five. The scored was knotted at 10 apiece at the midpoint of the 1st
quarter when the Lady Jaguars closed out the frame on a 10-0 run, to take a 20-10
lead. The second quarter was an evenly matched defensive battle that saw River Mill
take a 31-22 lead, by intermission.
River Mill extended it’s lead to 50-32 by the end of the third quarter, but Mt. Airy
still had another run to make. The Granite Bears closed to within 10 points with
2:40 remaining, but River Mill hit nine consecutive free throws to secure the
victory.
The Lady Jaguars used a balanced scoring attack, while Taylor Hiatt’s 23 points
paced the Granite Bears.
River Mill advances to the NCHSAA Western Regionals in Greensboro next week, while
Mt. Airy (Ranked #3 statewide in Class 1-A) ends its season with a
(24-5) record.

  1. If anyone talks about Wesleyan or Greensboro Day girls might as well talk about River Mill as River Mill demolished both of them this season. I am not saying either of those teams are great but they have been discussed so why not River Mill. Their only loss is a very close game loss to a very good team from Baltimore. They are probably on here because they send in their information.
