Greensboro College picks up Doubleheader Sweep at Averett on Saturday:(Jacob Cadle-WCDS with win in Gm 1)

Danville, Va. – Greensboro College swept a USA South doubleheader at Averett University by scores of 1-0 and 7-3 on Saturday. The Pride improved to 7-9 and 2-2 in conference.

Jacob Cadle (Denton, NC/Westchester Country Day School) and Michael Manfro (Fauquier, VA/Notre Dame Academy) held the Cougars scoreless in the opener. Cadle (1-2) pitched 6 2/3 innings and scattered three hits. Manfro got his first save of the year and allowed three hits.

Matt Irwin (Asburn, VA/Stone Bridge) went 2-4 and knocked in Quinn Finnegan (Ft. Lauderdale, Fl/Plantation High School) for the game’s only tally in the fifth inning. Finnegan singled and stole second base before Irwin’s hit.

In the nightcap, The Pride collected 12 hits en route to the win. Josh Powell went 3-4 with a run and two RBI to lead GC hitters. Logan Beasley (Liberty, NC/Eastern Randolph High School) went 2-5 with a double and Austin Catherina (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley CHS), Manfro and Finnegan all had recorded two hits.

On the mound, Murray Smith (Williston, SC/Williston-Elko High School) worked seven frames and got his first win (1-2) of the year. He allowed three runs (two earned) and four hits. J.R. Pike (Graham, NC/Graham) and Manfro, who earned his second save of the day, closed out the game for GC.

Note: The USA South wins were the first for second-year Head Coach Matt Aker. GC went 0-12 in 2010.
