Track and Field Results – Guilford Competes in High Point’s VertKlasse Meeting

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Guilford College’s Derick Kosgei won the men’s 5,000-meter run and Jackie Grant broke her own school record in the javelin Sunday at the VertKlasse Meeting at High Point University.

Kosgei outkicked four runners with a winning time of 15 minutes, 33.92 seconds. His winning effort was one of five top-five showing by Guilford’s men’s team at the predominantly NCAA Division I and Division II meet.

  • Guilford’s 1,600-meter relay team of John Michael Chelminski, Joshua Farrar, Michael Mellinger and Dylan Skinner placed second among four teams in a time of 3:35.74.
  • Farrar ran a season-best 51.35 seconds in the 400 meters to finish fifth among 15 runners. His time is the second-fastest in school history.
  • Johnathan Smith placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.97 seconds, his third sub-11 second mark of the year.
  • The Quakers’ Cyle Barber took fifth in the high jump with a leap of 1.83 meters (6’0”).

Guilford’s David LaPlaca had a season-long toss of 38.68 meters (126’11”) in the javelin, which placed 11th of 12 contestants. Omari Tait’s 5.86-meter long jump matched teammate Travis Robinson’s longest leap of the year. Tait took eighth in the 11-man field.

Grant finished 11th among 21 throwers with a toss of 27.07 meters (88’9”), over 0.64 meters better than her previous school record set at last weekend’s Lynchburg College Track Classic.

Both Guilford track and field teams will compete in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships Apr. 22-23 in Salem, Va.
