Men’s Lacrosse Final – #8 Roanoke 29, Guilford 8

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jeff Keating scored three goals and three assists in eighth-ranked Roanoke College’s 29-8 men’s lacrosse win at Guilford College Wednesday.

With their seventh straight victory, the Maroons (12-3, 7-0 ODAC) clinched the top seed and a first-round bye for the upcoming Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament. Guilford (9-7, 2-5 ODAC) failed to qualify for the six-team tourney, but concluded its best season since 1992.

Ranked eighth in this week’s United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association NCAA Division III Poll, Roanoke jumped out to an early 7-0 lead thanks to two of Richard Lachlan’s three goals. The lead swelled to 16-3 late in the second quarter as the Maroons scored nine of the period’s first 10 tallies. Stephen Degenhardt and Keating scored consecutive goals a mere six seconds apart in the quarter.

Leading 17-4 at halftime, Mike Hayden scored his second goal of the game nine seconds into the third quarter. It was one of Roanoke’s five extra-man goals in the match.

The Quakers scored four of the match’s next five goals and made it a 19-8 game on an Alex Abramson tally, but Roanoke outscored Guilford, 10-0, the rest of the way. The Maroons’ Ty Roselli scored two of his three goals in that time.

Fifteen different Maroons dent the twine Wednesday, including Degenhardt, Roselli, Keating, Lachlan, Joey Coretti and Justin Tuma. With Sam Newland, Guilford’s top faceoff man out of the lineup, Tuma dominated the draws, winning 24-of-28 and collecting 21 ground balls.

Guilford’s Chris Sisk paced the Quakers with three goals and teammate Greg Nash added two scores and an assist. Both students are among the 19 slated to return for first-year coach Tom Carmean’s club in 2012. The Quakers look to build on Guilford’s finest men’s lacrosse season since the 1992 club went 10-5 and won a school-record three ODAC games.
