High Point Andrews basketball coach James Abell will not lead the Raiders next season:Has Abellity, but wants to spend time with family!

He has one of the best coaching records around, (26-3) last season and (177-51) in 8 seasons, as the boys head basketball coach, at High Point Andrews…..He was an assistant coach at Dudley HS, under Coach David Price for several seasons, before he took over and re-built the HP Andrews program….James Abell is able, but right now not willing to coach….He wants to spend more time with his wife and kids…..More power to him and he’s done an excellent job where ever he has been…..Maybe he will re-surface with Greg Thompson, over at Southern Guilford next January, after he has had some time off, to re-charge his batteries and spend time with his family….Abell has the (cap)abellities and we will see him back on the bench one day…..

HIGH POINT — T.W. Andrews boys basketball coach James Abell is stepping down to spend more time with his family after eight years as head of the program.

“It was time to move on,” said Abell, whose son is 6 and daughters are 3 and 1. “I wanted to be closer to my home and family. Basketball had to give.”

Abell, who also taught math at the school, led Andrews to three regional appearances — including this winter when the Raiders went 26-3 and made an undefeated run through PAC-6 2A play.

He won five conference championships, seven conference tournament championships, four conference coach of the year awards and finished with a record of 177-51 during his career at Andrews.

“He has done a wonderful job at the school and with the program,” athletic director Ben Robinson said. “He’s gotten us back to a high level. I hate he’s going, but I admire his decision.”

Abell, who made the decision over the holiday weekend, said he would like to transfer to a school closer to his home in Greensboro and had been thinking about it for some time. But it was never easy to make that final decision.

  1. Have been watching area basketball for some time now. Too bad about Coach Abell stepping down. He will be missed. Heard from a good source that Adam Coble of NWG may be going to Hargrave next year. Been watching him for a while. I know he had a torn ACL but I hear that he is doing well. Source says he is now 6’9 and well developed. Looking forward to seeing him back on the court. PJ Hairston says UNC and Richmond has shown interest in Adam. Does anyone know if he has committed?

  2. I hate to see him leaving. I wonder who they will get to replace him? Will Coach Abell have any say so in who replaces his program he has built. It would make sense if he had input in the decision since those are his guys that he has worked so hard with and done such a great job with. Want to make sure they get a good coach.

Hey Andy i wonder if his buddy Coach Thompson would try and replace him at Andrews. Thompson son has graduated from Southern now so he might think of leaving and taking over a more dominant basketball program with a lot more winning tradition than Southern has in basketball.

  3. Coach Thompson would be a good one, he knows the game…..Justin Gainey is an assitant coach in college at Elon, App or somewhere…..He would be a good one and you have to get your first head job somewhere….

Would love to see Greg Thompson put Southern Guilford on the map with basketball and go deep in the State Playoffs with his team……Always refreshing to see a coach take a team from nowhere to somewhere…..NEG has one more year of dominance and then the Rams will see some drop-off, one would think….
