SOUTH ATLANTIC LEAGUE ANNOUNCES ROSTERS
FOR 52nd ANNUAL SAL ALL-STAR GAME
ST. PETERSBURG, FL-Eric Krupa, president of the South
Atlantic League, has announced the rosters for the 52nd Annual SAL
All-Star Game, scheduled to be played on June 21, 2011, at Arthur W.
Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Maryland, home of the Delmarva Shorebirds.
For the Northern Division, the Delmarva Shorebirds,
Hagerstown Suns and Lakewood BlueClaws tied for the team-high number of
representatives, at five apiece. Delmarva’s Manuel Machado will start
at shortstop. Hagerstown provides three starters, including David
Freitas as the catcher, Blake Kelso at third base and Bryce Harper in
right field. Harper received more votes than any other player on either
squad. Lakewood also provides three starters, including starting pitcher
David Buchanan, first baseman Jim Murphy and designated hitter Anthony
Hewitt. Three Kannapolis Intimidators were named to the starting
lineup, including Ross Wilson at second base, Trayce Thompson in center
field and Brady Shoemaker in left field. The Hickory Crawdads and West
Virginia Power each contributed three players while the Greensboro
Grasshoppers provided two players for the Northern squad.
Hagerstown manager Brian Daubach will skipper the Northern
Division All-Star. Daubach is in his first season in the league, and
his third year as a manager. Daubach will be assisted by Delmarva
manager Ryan Minor and Hagerstown pitching coach Chris Michalak.
Handling the trainer’s duties will be Delmarva’s Will Lawhorn.
For the Southern Division, the Savannah Sand Gnats led the division with
six players, including starting pitcher Taylor Whitenton. The Asheville
Tourists, Augusta GreenJackets and Charleston RiverDogs each provide 4
players. Asheville’s Bryce Massanari will be the catcher and Kyle
Parker will be in right field while Augusta provides Carlos Willoughby
at second base and Adam Duvall at third base. Charleston’s Slade
Heathcott will start in center field. The Greenville Drive and Lexington
Legends each provide three players, with Greenville’s Brandon Jacobs
starting in left field and Miles Head at first base. Head was the top
vote-getter for the Southern Division. Lexington’s Jiovanni Mier will
start at shortstop. The Rome Braves send two players, including
designated hitter Jakob Dalfonso.
Savannah skipper Ryan Ellis will manage the Southern Division squad.
Ellis is in his first season as a manager, and his fifth overall as a
member of the New York Mets organization. Joining Ellis on the Southern
Division coaching staff will be Augusta pitching coach Steve Kline and
Savannah coach Jose Carreno. Greenville’s David Herrera will serve as
the team’s trainer.
Both all-star teams will be represented by 26 players,
selected by the votes of the team’s managers and coaching staffs, local
media and front office executives. Arthur W. Perdue Stadium will be
hosting its second SAL All-Star game. The last time the All-Star Game
was held in Salisbury was in 1999, when the Southern Division defeated
the Northern Division 5-2 in 10 innings. The annual SAL All-Star Game
dates to 1960, when the All-Stars defeated the Salisbury club, 6-2, in
Newton, NC.
“The amount of talent that is showcased each year in this
game is tremendous, and this year certainly continues that tradition, ”
said Krupa. “General Manager Chris Bitters and his staff in Delmarva
have been working for more than a year in order to put together one of
the most anticipated events on the baseball calendar.”
A variety of events have been scheduled in Salisbury along
with the SAL All-Star Game. On Tuesday, June 21st, there will be an
All-Star Luncheon at the Fountains Wedding & Conference Center where the
2011 SAL Hall of Fame members will be inducted. Mike Hargrove, Ray
Hathaway and Frank Perdue will be honored as members of the class of
2011. Beginning at 2:30pm at the stadium, the All-Fan Fest will be an
opportunity for fans to get autographs from and pictures with the SAL
All-Stars. A Home Run Derby begins at 5:30pm and the first pitch of the
2011 All-Star Game is scheduled at 7:30pm. More information can be
found on the website of the Delmarva Shorebirds at
