Day One win and writeup on Greensboro Green at Colt World Series with Jeff Washburn

from Jeff Washburn at www.jconline.com:

For Greensboro, N.C., Saturday’s 6-2 Colt World Series victory against Laredo, Texas, was all about overcoming self-created obstacles.

The East Zone champions issued nine walks, hit a batter, threw six wild pitches and were guilty of two errors, but each time it needed a big out, Greensboro got it. Laredo stranded 12 and scored its two runs only because of a pair of wild pitches.

At the plate, the 2010 CWS runners-up scored all six of their runs after two were out — three in the top of the first against losing pitcher Joel Garza and three more in the top of the fourth.

Greensboro leadoff man and second baseman Nino Marrero doubled and scored in the top of the first and singled home a two-out run in the fourth.
Marrero, Jaylin Davis and DJ Reader — the top three hitters in the Greensboro lineup — were a collective 6-for-11 with four runs scored and three RBIs.

Still, the sloppy work on the mound concerned Greensboro manager D’Angelo Hall.

  1. I am sure that my comment will be considered negative, so I will say that it would be nice for Greensboro to win a colt world series; but the competition does not appear to be very strong based on the scores.
