Of the two Class 4A high school football heavweights that squared off Friday night at Mallard Creek, the No. 2 Mavericks turned out to be the better counterpunchers.
No. 1- ranked Butler rallied from a two-touchdown deficit early, but Mallard Creek got a 40-yard touchdown pass from halfback Jamel Harbison to Marquez North with seven minutes to play to wrap up a hard-fought 28-20 victory over the Bulldogs in the first-ever game between the two state championship contenders.
