Michael Obacha(High Point Christian Academy) makes commitment to DI Appalachian State in Boone

High Point Christian senior forward Michael Obacha committed to the Appalachian
State Mountaineers and Coach Jason Capel last night. Obacha, who attended Oak Ridge
Military Academy last season, is a 6’7″ 215lbs power forward that is known
nationally for his effort on the basketball court. He is the second HPCA senior in
two years to commit to an NCAA Division I school following Jordan Weethee (VMI) in
the 2011 class.

“Obacha has not been with us very long, but he is already making an impact with our
school and program” says HPCA basketball coach Brandon Clifford. “What’s more
important is that he will make as much of a difference off the court than on it for
our team. He handles his business in a much different way than most high school
kids. He is an outstanding student and is a tremendous young man. He is an excellent
example for our younger players.”

Obacha is expected to play a key role for the 2011-2012 Cougars. HPCA lost six
players from last year’s team that spent most of the season ranked in the top 5 of
the NCISAA 3A rankings, including 2012 Missouri commit Aaron Scales who has
graduated early and is attending prep school this season. Obacha will play alongside
fellow Nigerian, 6’11” Chuck Ogbodo, in the frontcourt this year for HPCA.

  1. Couldnt be happier Michael, one of the most amazing human beings you will ever meet. PERIOD!! HPC and ASU are very fortunate to have this young man.
    CONGRATS!

    Vegas Mike

  2. Looks like the Greensboro Kids are really beginning to sign those scholarships! The talent pool is strong for the boys in this class and next years.

  3. Not bad at all for a kid that someone on here said he wasn’t any good and had no d1 interest. Kid plays like an animal. Saw him with HPCA in June at Proehlific and their system fits him perfectly. Not many bigs will be able to run with him and outwork him around the rim. They really get up and down and thats where a kid like him will shine. He had just dunk after dunk. With their guard play and Ogbodo they are extremely athletic, big, and talented. Not many teams can play 3 guys over 6’6″ and still be fast. With Kent, Obacha, and Ogbodo they can do that. Plus had some guards that were surprisingly very good. There is a kid from Virginia with braids that can flat out shoot the ball. Basketball season will be fun this year. There are some really good teams around these parts.

  4. Whats the deal with Jackson Kent leaving Page and going over to HPCA. You would think, of all public school kids, a coach’s son wouldn’t leave his team for his senior year. Just curious.

  5. I guess coaches’ kids just like everyone else’s think that reclassifying will make then a D1 player instead of a D3 player. Crazy!!!!!!!!

  6. Is it true that both Reggie D. and B. Clyburn have left Dudley? …Dillard will be attending GDS and Clyburn will be attending New Garden Friends or Southwest???? Quite a few players are leaving Dudley or just not playing for Price anymore. What is going on over there?

  7. Jackson Kent will get a chance to get that extra year by re-classing and that will give him time to get bigger and stronger and sometimes you need some space and the chance to try another system than that of your dad….Good to see the game from a different perspective and that’s what Jackson will get with Coach Clifford…..

The kids leaving Dudley? Not sure if that has been verified……

  8. Kent had D1 offers before reclassing Dale, if you were implying he was a D3 prospect before. A low-major to potentially high-major prospect is what he becomes now as he is getting ACC attention. His showing in the CP3 tourneyat Proehlific once he left the Greensboro Day Gaters to join Clifford’s team was very wise because he had a huge tourney and more than a few ACC schools are now actively recruiting him according to his new hs coach.

  9. Kids leaving Dudley… 100% positive that Dillard (GDS) and Clyburn (SWHS) have transferred! Others have left as well…

  10. Jackson Kent and Franie Eaves were the best shooters in their conference this past season. Kent showed remarkable range and Eaves was a great spt on shooter. It is no surprise that they are being recruited based on their talent. Kent has the height and range and can be a great markman for any college. Eaves will be a nice overall fit for a school. Kent reclassing makes since because he truly has upside versus some kids. He also has the resume to go along with it. He was Conference Player of the Year.

  11. Sam Hunt from Dudley should have a super year. He has all the tools to be a great one. He has great game awareness and is very skilled. Colleges will be lining up for this one.

  12. Maybe HPC academy should pay more attention to the fact that Michael Obacha is an illegal immigrant instead of where he is going to college. How about contacting Julious Brown in Florida and find out the REAL deal about the ALLEGED 17 year old! I bet APU did check any records either. Some coaches will do ANYTHING to win.
