KERNERSVILLE — Juawan Ferguson scored on a 12-yard run up the middle of East Forsyth’s beleaguered defense with 21 seconds left, lifting Mount Tabor to an improbable 21-17 nonconference win on Friday night.

The score capped a game in which East Forsyth — which nearly survived seven turnovers — made a stunning fourth-quarter comeback for the lead. But the Eagles suffered their sixth turnover on a late fumble, giving the Spartans one last chance.

“We both made a lot of mistakes,” coach Laymarr Marshall of Mount Tabor said. “I wish we would have kept our composure a little better at times, but our team showed a lot of heart.

“To make the plays on that last drive, that takes heart.”

Jalen Forrest of East tackled Mount Tabor quarterback Mike Eldridge and ripped the ball away with 2:11 left. East led 17-14, had the ball at the Mount Tabor 43 and needed only to kill the clock.

But on third-and-1 from the 35, Garrison Duncan fumbled the snap, and Ben Thomas of Mount Tabor crawled out of the pile with the football.

Mount Tabor had two timeouts and 68 yards to go with 1:25 left, but found a way to break East’s heart.
