College Women’s Soccer Final – Guilford 2, Meredith 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman Hannah Schiltz (Ashland, Mo./Southern Boone) tapped in a Gabrielle Lahowitch (Decatur, Ga./Decatur) shot with 11.9 seconds left to give Guilford College a 2-1 victory over visiting Meredith College Thursday night.

Schiltz’s first college score capped a quickly developing play as Guilford rushed to beat the final horn. With Meredith pressing forward, Guilford’s Jaclyn Nucci (Gambrills, Md./South River (Anne Arundel C.C.)) won a ball near midfield and fed it ahead to Lahowitch. The junior carried the ball into the box and slotted a shot just beyond Meredith keeper Kelsey Hopper (Wilmington, N.C./Ashley), which Schiltz tapped in from one yard out near the corner of the goal.

The Avenging Angels (0-1) took a 1-0 lead midway through the second half when rookie Rachel Didier (Cary, Ill./Prairie Ridge) headed in a long cross from Carrie Talbert (Wilmington, N.C./New Hanover) in the 62nd minute.

The Quakers (1-0) tied the game just over two minutes later when Lahowitch placed a penalty kick in the goal’s bottom right corner after a Meredith handball in the box.

The Avenging Angels outshot Guilford, 12-8, but had few serious threats. Senior goalies Kat Adams (oak Island, N.C./South Brunswick) and Amy Baker (Millersville, Md./Old Mill (Anne Arundel C.C.)) both made two saves in 45 minutes of work for Guilford. Meredith’s Hopper finished with three stops.

Guilford heads to Meredith for this weekend’s Avenging Angels’ Meredith College Classic. The Quakers play the University of Rutgers-Newark Saturday at 3:15 p.m. Meredith hosts Salem College Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
