College Volleyball Results – Guilford Splits on First Day of Greensboro Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s volleyball team went the distance in both of its matches Friday at the Greensboro College Invitational. The Quakers rallied past the host Pride, 3-2, in their first match, and fell to league-rival Roanoke College, 3-2, in their second match.

The host Pride pulled out a 33-31 third-set win to open a 2-1 edge in the day’s first contest, but Guilford bounced back with a 25-22 win in the fourth set and scored a 15-10 triumph in the decisive fifth set. Quakers’ senior Emma Gunn had a career-high 19 kills on .576 hitting, both Guilford season highs, to pace the Quakers’ offense. Fellow middle blocker Malikah French also turned in a career-high with 17 putaways on .517 hitting. Taylor Whitley had a career-best 51 assists. Laura Kopald added 11 kills, including three in the decisive fifth set.

Guilford (2-4) won two of the first three sets against Roanoke College (2-3), including a 22-13 triumph in the third set. The Maroons rallied behind strong play from Sarah Long (16 kills) and Sam Klosterman (15 kills) to win the fourth set, 25-18, before pulling out a 20-18 win in the fifth set. Guilford trailed, 13-8, in the fifth set, but reeled off six of the next seven points. Roanoke staved off four match points in the final set, thanks in part to three kills and three digs by Kelsey Largen.

Kopald led Guilford with 14 kills and no errors, which contributed to a .359 hitting percentage. Brittany DeCesare had 11 kills and three service aces. Mary Moody also had 11 putaways. Taylor Phillips led all students with 31 digs.

The Quakers close out tournament play Saturday (9/10) with matches against Piedmont College (10 am) and Peace College (4 pm).
