Cross Country News – Guilford’s Chad Norton Wins Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Chad Norton (Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake) collected the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week and the Guilford College Student-Athlete of the Week Awards Monday. The Guilford award is presented weekly by the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Norton set Guilford’s cross country record for a five-kilometer course Sept. 16 by running the Adidas Cross Country Challenge in 15 minutes, 24.9 seconds. He placed 15th among 96 runners, but held the top spot among non-Division I runner at the meet hosted by N.C. State University. Norton’s time bettered the previous Guilford record by 26 seconds. The Division III Quakers finished fifth among nine teams with 140 points, the highest of all non-Division I schools, and one point better than Division I member Longwood University.

Coach Bill Cason’s team is back in action Sept. 30 when they run in the Charlotte Invitational in Charlotte, N.C. Guilford is ranked eighth in the latest United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association Division III South/Southeast Regional Rankings.

The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford’s SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 20 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among Guilford’s student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a cancer awareness promotions, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
