Without football UNCG will never be taken seriously as an athletic institution:DIII by 2015 and SoCon play by 2020 would work

That’s about as plain as you can put it…..

UNCG will not be taken seriuosly as an athletic institution, until they add football as a sport to their athletic programs……The Spartans do not have a complete athletic department without football….

If they added football, they could be DIII by 2015 and then a full football playing member of the Southern Conference by 2020…..

The year 2020 seems very far off, but this type of sport implementation takes time….

Does this idea make sense to you? It does to me, but maybe not to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro athletic director, Kim Record…..

Record went on record, with the News and Record last week saying no to footall in the future….The N&R’s Gerald Witt asked Record is football in the future for UNCG? Record responded, “Not on may radar screen….There is a UNCG shirt, and on the back it says, “Still Undefeated.’ And we get the licensing royalties from that. And that’s a good thing.”

If you are making any money at all off a shirt that promotes a football program that does not exsist, think what you might make if you had a football program that took the field at Spartan Stadium…….

To me Record is being shortsighted……Right now the UNCG Spartans compete on the Division I level, but they may as well be playing intramural sports over there….There is no public perception for UNCG sports/athletics within the Greensboro community…..There was more buzz for UNCG men’s soocer back they when they were playing at the DIII level and winning National Championships…….

This school needs a buzz and College Football at UNCG would help to create that buzz…..The basketball move to the Greensboro Coliseum has not created that buzz….So far that experiment has not worked, but maybe we will start to see signs of it working this year…..Let’s hope so, for both parties involved, UNCG and the Greensboro Coliseum…..

The addition of football to the UNCG program is what will work….It will bring and draw that buzz to the university and to the city….It is what is lacking….Fans are looking for some Saturday night football to go watch and enjoy, live and in person…..Jamieson Stadium could house the Spartans in the early stages and then the team could move on campus to an expanded Spartan Stadium……Say a 20,000 seat stadium….That would work and can you imagine the buzz with Elon and Appalachian coming in here for a Saturday night game???

This is a great idea and I’m glad I thought of it and I wish UNCG would investigate the possibilities…..

UNC-Charlotte/Charlotte has added football and that is really creating a buzz down in their city and among the students and alumni throughout their campus and in the surrounding area…..

Old Dominion, up in Norfolk, Virginia added football and it seems to be working real well for the Monarchs…..

Football will bring a buzz to your city and to your campus…..It is what the Fall of the year is all about……

High Point University is looking to add football in the next 10 years and it wasn’t so long ago that Greensboro College, North Carolina Wesleyan, Methodist, Campbell and UNC-Pembroke added or renewed football programs at their schools….

This is a great idea and something needs to be done about it….There has always been talk about bringing football to the former Women’s College….UNCG used to be known as WC(Women’s College)……

Are the men/boys over there at the Women’s College afraid to play some football??? Is the AD Kim Record trying to protect her Spartan boys so they don’t get hurt?

What would it hurt if UNCG added football? The Spartans and their leader need a vision and they need to become forward thinking sports people…..

What would it hurt to add football? Nothing, it would help….. It would bring an excitement and a buzz to the university and if they followed my plan of DIII football by 2015 and a full Southern Conference contact/connect by 2020, then that would be a good working formula…….

I was thinking about this topic last week and then I saw the article in the Saturday paper and I decided to follow through and put this plan on the table…..

Former and long-time athletic director Nelson Bobb didn’t want football at UNCG….Current AD Kim Record appears to be against the the notion, based on what we saw Saturday, in the News and Record…….

UNCG just dropped one sport when they eliminated wrestling last year, why not add a sport to make up for that loss???

Am I the only one around here that wants to party and play some football at the Spartan Stadium?

You might say, “if you add football where is the money going to come from?”

UNCG has the Joseph Bryan School of Business, so why not stretch that business sense and go get the Bryan Foundation to fund the football program and then put Mr. Bryan’s name on top of the Spartan Stadium……Joseph Bryan Spartan Stadium has a nice ring to it……..

I still can see it happening by 2015, but we need to get to work…..But maybe the real problem goes back to what I was saying earlier……

Maybe Kim Record is afraid her boys over at UNCG will go and get hurt if they play football……Kim you’ve got to turn those boys loose and let them play…..In case you didn’t get the memo, they do wear protective equipment in football these days and the boys will be OK……

The boys will be OK…….Let them play…….

Come on Kim, Let Them Play!

  1. Absurd! No foundation for this whatsoever! Please stick to middle school football postings. You know nothing of college athletics! You would be a foreign exchange student in our library!

  2. On the money man.

    Right on the money.

UNCG needs to have football and this would be a great fit in Greensboro. As of right now, sir, I haven’t seen any football around this town lately and we could sure use it, so why not? Why don’t you people put some pressure on UNCG? We need football in this city. UNCG vs. Wake Forest would be excellent for this overall Triad Sports Community. Why are so many people against this? I for one would love to see it happen and it has much more relativity than UNCG vs. ACC basketball does. Football can be your money sport.

Others join me and please back this effort!

  3. Football would be good for UNCG. Good school, beautiful campus, continues to grow. Football would be a positive for the school. they would have no trouble finding talent. Would be a great FCS (D1-AA) option or D3 if desired. UNCC is going with football and it is already having a positive impact on the school. Look at what football has done for Ap State. Applications are up 4 fold in 10 years, the school has grown and admissions standards have risen. Long term it helps build a stronger alumni base. It would not be difficult to build around the current soccer field. It would be a great environment.

  4. Right now I think a middle school could beat UNCG…..All UNCG has is a football shirt and I think the middle school teams could beat that shirt….All of our middle schools have football, all of our high schools have football, all of our 4-year colleges in town(Guilford, Greensboro, N.C. A&T) have football……Why shouldn’t UNCG have football? What is there to be afraid of? It could work and be a huge success…..Not trying to be overly hard on UNCG for their shortsightedness…..This is a wake-up call….Wake up and play Wake Forest, Applachian, Elon, Duke, N.C. A&T and the other schools that are being mentioned…..Can you imagine a UNCG-N.C. A&T football game and the first one ever, that would be unreal, almost surreal….

Again this is a Wake-up call…..Listen to what the people are saying and you know what the sports fans are thinking…..UNCG needs football and they need it soon……Can you imagine a game maybe between UNCG and say one of the Ivy League schools? Say UNCG vs. Harvard or UNCG vs. Yale maybe????? There would be a lot of history in a game like that…….The UNCG-UNCC(Charlotte) matchup is also very appealing……UNCG vs. UNC-Pembroke is also interesting…..All those kids from Greenboro that are at Pembroke would be coming home to Joe Bryan Spartan Stadium for the big game….Or even Winston-Salem State vs. UNCG or our border friends from Virginia…….Averett in the beginning and Ferrum and maybe Liberty later on…..And in the very early days you would get a chance to see UNCG vs. Guilford and UNCG vs. Greensboro College, while UNCG was in the process of building their program and moving from DIII to DI……Guilford beating UNCG in football? Greensboro College over the UNCG Spartans on the gridiron at Jamieson Stadium? Better get them while you can….This would be great at the outset…..The locals would love it and the parents and families from out of town would pile in here for that big weekend of football war…….Can we/they do it? Again, why not? We just got word that HIgh Point University has accepted and offer to play UNCG in football at Simeon Stadium in High Point….Why not?

This topic has legs and we need to run with it, right on over to Spartan Stadium……Maybe UNCG could meet Norfolk State and then later on Michigan State and face the Spartans at Spartan Stadium…..

Tell me and prove to me why this shouldn’t happen…..I dare you…….

  5. If you’re Division I in other sports, which UNCG allegedly is, you can’t be Division III in any sport, even starting out. That’s the NCAA rule. They could be provisional FCS, playing a schedule of D-II, D-III and NAIA schools for a few years, as South Alabama has been doing and as UNC Charlotte will do, but then they would have to move to full FCS (Division I-AA) status. They could do it without awarding scholarships, a la Davidson, but unless they want to drop down to D-II or D-III in all sports, they couldn’t ever be D-III in football.

  6. They would have to be DIII, but it would be in schedule only…..They would have to start out at that level and the others sports remain DI….They don’t drop down, they just play a DIII schedule in the beginning stages with provisional plans to move up…..Moving from a DIII schedule to the level of play in the Southern Conference over a five-year period, very similar to what Charlotte did and ODU too……You are right, you would not drop down, you would just be playing DIII schools on the way up…..Many different schedule looks along the way……

  7. I for one would not only buy tickets for any of the potential games mentioned for myself and family but would love to tailgate and invite family & friends from out of state to come watch. UNCG Football = Good for UNCG/Athletics, Good for Local Football Fans, Good for Greensboro. Dare I say UNCG football would have a bigger impact on Greensboro than the ACC basketball tournament?

  8. Andy I agree with you from what I have observed UNCG could be a good football school.
I think somebody does not want football beacuse that would create a little extra work and I dont know if Kim Record is up to that.
If you check the records I think you will find she has more assistants than unc and n c state so why not have football they need something to do..
I think that was a bad hire so until she is gone we will never get football there.

  9. This might wake up this city. Many young adults are leaving Greenboro for larger cities and this would give them a reason to hang around and see some quality entertainment. This type of offering has been lacking at UNCG for many years. This could be the turning point that puts this university on the map. What have they been waiting for and why are they still dragging their feet. Increase the student’s activities fee $50.00 a year and that will take care of the financial burden. In return they would get a free ticket to all the home games. $50.00 per student will give UNCG the money that they need to get started. I don’t care if the students complain or not, they need to be responsible and be a part of building the future of UNCG football. NOW is the time and like I said earlier what are they waiting for? This school, UNCG, is a sleeping giant and we need to kick them in the butt and get them moving ahead. Will they ever wake up and smell the end zone? I hope so, because it is about time they did something over there. They could bring in Butch Davis to be their coach. He needs a job and he knows how to get and bring in the players. UNCG football can be just what Greensboro needs. They said a new baseball stadium downtown would never work, so let’s prove them wrong again and kick off the UNCG Football Program.
